IOWA STATE CYCLONES
 |
This Cyclones team should look significantly different than the one that finished 12-19 a year ago and won just four Big 12
games. Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy, who may hate losing as much as any coach in the country, brought in an infusion of talent in the form
of three junior college transfers and the leading scorer in big-school history in Iowa high schools. Two of those newcomers -- point guard Tim Barnes and forward
Jackson Vroman -- are expected to be immediate starters. The athleticism the new players bring should help improve Iowa
State's defense. While Eustachy has preached defense and it was a huge part in the Cyclones recent back-to-back Big 12 titles, Iowa State
struggled to defend a year ago. While there are newcomers, a pair of junior starters also return
in guard Jake Sullivan and wing Marcus Jefferson. Both should be better with more talent around them.
TOUGH ENOUGH..............................
Jake Sullivan was the Big 12 freshman of the year when he had Jamal Tinsley playing the point. Last season, Sullivan had
to play point guard and he wasn't as productive. With Barnes playing point guard this season, Sullivan should be better. A fantastic outside
shooter, Sullivan has also lost some weight in an attempt to improve his quickness.
TOUGH ENOUGH?..............................
Iowa State's lack of depth -- something that was compounded when potential juco recruit Jerome Harper never arrived in
Ames and guard Shane Power tranferred to Mississippi State -- could be very damaging. For the Cyclones to be successful they simply can't afford any injuries.
BOTTOM LINE..............................
Iowa State will be impoved this season as the Cyclones have more athletes and Sullivan will be in better position to
suceed. Will that be enough for a first division finish in the Big 12? Possibly. But the reality is probably that too many things have to go
right. Iowa State, with just one senior on the roster, is probably a year away.
