PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Jermaine Medley scored 18 points and Gary
Buchanan added 17 as Villanova held off a late rally by local rival
Temple, handing the Owls (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today, unranked AP) their fourth defeat in a row, 69-62
Tuesday night.
| | Lynn Greer (14) had 16 points and nine assists for Temple, which couldn't avoid another disappointing loss. |
Temple played the second half without starting guard Quincy
Wadley, who suffered a sprained shoulder injury with three minutes left in
the first half. Wadley, who entered averaging 11.7 points
per game, was held scoreless and did not play
after halftime.
"It's his left arm. I'm hoping it's not dislocated," Temple coach John Chaney added.
Villanova (4-1) took a 48-36 lead on a 3-pointer by Buchanan
with 14:15 left to play. Alex Wesby then sparked Temple (4-4) on an
18-6 run, and the Owls tied the score at 54 on a Wesby trey with
6:56 to go.
Another 3-point shot by Wesby with 5:19 remaining gave Temple
its only lead of the game, 59-56. But Medley hit a 3-point shot,
sparking a 11-0 run capped by a Brook Sales layup at the 1:08 mark
to seal the victory.
The Wildcats used a barrage of 3-point shots to open up a 28-18
lead midway through the first half, and held a 35-25 advantage at
halftime.
Buchanan made 4 of 5 from the arc and Medley 4 of 6 to pace
Villanova, which hit on 11 of 22 shots in the half when Temple was
only 10 of 28.
Sales had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Michael Bradley 10
points and nine rebounds for the Wildcats. Lynn Greer had 16
points and nine assists for Temple, while Wesby tallied 15 points all
in the second half.
