DURHAM, N.C. (AP) -- Even though Shane Battier scored a
career-high 31 points and missed only one shot all night, he still
wasn't perfect.
"I can tell you four or five things that I missed or played
wrong, so like everyone, I'm in search of the perfect game,"
Battier said after 10th-ranked Duke's 109-65 defeat of Davidson on
Tuesday night.
Battier's only miss came in the first half when he amassed 20
points and was 10-of-10 from the foul line.
"Shane showed the aggressiveness that we need to see from him.
There is no question about that," said Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski,
who was much more pleased with his team's performance than in
Sunday's 101-60 victory over North Carolina A&T. During that game,
he yelled at players and had a long talk with them afterward about
not playing up to par.
Carlos Boozer finished with 21, Jason Williams added 20 and
Chris Carrawell 13 for Duke (8-2).
The Blue Devils have beaten Davidson (3-4) 13 times in a row and
have not lost to an in-state non-Atlantic Coast Conference opponent
in 18 years since Davidson defeated Duke on Dec. 29, 1981. Duke is
156-26 against non-ACC teams from North Carolina.
After Battier's dominant first half, it was Boozer's turn in the
second half.
Boozer, who sat down after nine minutes in the first half with
two fouls, scored 15 points in the opening nine minutes of the
second half. A two-handed dunk on a pass from Carrawell and a
turnaround jumper put Duke up 71-45 with 15:25 to go.
"I just came out in the second half wanting to score, wanted to
come out with an intensity and put the ball in the hole," Boozer
said.
After Battier hit a 3, Boozer made a driving layup and was
fouled. Boozer missed the free throw, but Jason Williams got the
rebound and Boozer was fouled again going to the basket. Boozer
made both foul shots this time to give Duke an 80-47 lead with
12:52 left.
The Blue Devils reached 100 for the third straight game when
Jason Williams sank a 3 with 6:30 remaining to put Duke ahead
101-59.
"In the second half, Duke controlled everything we did -- our passing, our dribbling, our shooting, our defense. That's what makes them so good," Davidson coach Bob McKillop said.
The Wildcats hung close in the opening minutes, but Duke pulled
away from a 7-7 tie after Davidson's Michael Bree hit a 3 with
16:20 to go in the first half. The Wildcats sent Carrawell, Casey
Sanders and Battier to the foul line in the next two minutes. A
jumper by Battier capped six foul shots and made it 17-9 with 14:15
left before halftime.
Duke led 38-28 with 8:17 to go in the first half on Williams' 3
and it was 48-28 after Boozer made two free throws and Nate James
hit one with 3:46 remaining in the half. Carrawell closed out the
half with three baskets to give Duke a 58-37 lead.
Davidson was led in scoring by Stephen Marshall with 15 points
and Wayne Bernard with 10.
Duke improved its home winning streak to 41, second-longest in
the nation after Murray State's 45.
