Cowboys win 'wild and wooly affair'

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- North Texas' helter-skelter style doesn't lend itself to pretty basketball, although Oklahoma State coach Eddie Sutton wasn't complaining Saturday night.

The Cowboys (No. 23 ESPN/USA Today, No. 21 AP) had six players score in double figures and three finish with double-doubles in a 103-65 victory.

"It was kind of a wild and wooly affair," Sutton said. "The way they play forces you to play a little faster than maybe you would at times.

"There were some bad things as far as not being consistent in our defense. There were some defensive lapses we've got to get corrected, and maybe our shot selection wasn't what it should be."

None of that mattered, though. After a slow start, the Cowboys took advantage of poor shooting by North Texas to take a 21-point lead at halftime. They continued to widen the margin in the second half, opening as much as a 40-point lead.

Glendon Alexander scored 19 points, and Brian Montonati had 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds in 26 minutes. Desmond Mason, despite not shooting well, had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Doug Gottlieb had 16 assists and 13 points.

"He's a quick jumper, which allows him to be a good rebounder at both ends of the floor," Sutton said of Montonati, whose previous best of 13 rebounds came last week against Idaho. "He's as good an offensive rebounder as we have on the ball club."

Frederik Jonzen added 15 points and Alex Webber scored a dozen for the Cowboys (4-0), who shot close to 60 percent and outrebounded North Texas 58-46.

"That's one of the things that will allow us to be a nice ball club," Sutton said of his team's depth. "Alexander's a great one to bring off the bench because he's such a good offensive basketball player. We certainly can bring some big people off the bench."

Chris Davis scored 19 points and Kyle Crawford had 14 for North Texas (0-2), which shot just 33 percent and committed 24 turnovers.
