ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Johnny Hemsley led three Miami players in double figures and the Hurricanes (No. 24 ESPN/USA Today, unranked AP) pulled away in the second half to beat Central Florida 81-54 Friday night. Hemsley scored 17 points and Mario Bland and Elton Tyler had 14 each as Miami shot 46.7 percent from the field. UCF (0-1) struggled offensively, shooting 34.5 percent, including 29.2 percent from 3-point range. D'Quarius Stewart led UCF with 12 points, but made only four of 17 shots. Paul Reed added 11 points for the Golden Knights. Miami (1-0) held a 40-33 rebounding edge and took advantage of 21 UCF turnovers. Miami opened the second half with a 19-6 run to build a 57-35 lead with 12:30 remaining. The closest the Golden Knights would get from there was 16 points, 60-44, with 8:43 remaining. Miami then went on a 12-3 run to lead 72-47 and finished the game on a 17-5 run. Hemsley scored 10 of his points in the first half to help the Hurricanes take a 38-29 lead. The game was tied 17-17 with 9:28 remaining in the half when Bland made a layup to give Miami the lead for good. John Salmons sank a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left in the half. Before the game, Miami got some bad news when it learned that guard Michael Simmons is expected to miss three to six weeks after undergoing surgery to remove bone spurs from his right foot. Simmons, a 6-foot, 185-pound sophomore, played in 27 games last season, making 12 starts. He averaged 2.7 points, 1.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists.
