Cowboys brush off Appalachian State

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma State put its balance and depth on display in a season-opening victory Friday night.

The Cowboys (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today, No. 23 AP) didn't shoot very well, just 44 percent. But they had four players score in double figures and two others finish with 10 or more rebounds as they beat Appalachian State 87-75 in the America's Youth Classic.

Joe Adkins had 18 points. Glendon Alexander came off the bench to score 15 and Desmond Mason had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.

Doug Gottlieb had 10 assists and freshman Andre Williams grabbed 10 rebounds in 17 minutes.

"That's a healthy situation," coach Eddie Sutton said. "Any time you depend on just one, two or three players, there are nights that they don't shoot the ball well or the other team defends well. I think that's one reason we have a chance to be a good basketball team."

Williams, called on when Brian Montonati and Fredrik Jonzen got into foul trouble, helped shut down the Mountaineers' inside game and force them to try to win from the perimeter.

It didn't work. Rufus Leach made eight 3-pointers and scored 28, but the Mountaineers (21-8 a year ago) shot just 41 percent and were outrebounded 53-29.

Oklahoma State started sluggishly, missing seven of its first 10 shots and later going seven minutes with just one field goal. But a 10-0 run late in the half helped the Cowboys overcome a seven-point deficit and take a 37-34 halftime lead.

A shot by Corey Cooper brought Appalachian State within 39-36 in the first minute of the second half. The Cowboys then scored 11 straight during the next 4½ minutes to make the score 50-36.

Gottlieb started the surge with a drive to the basket, and he had assists on two other buckets including a high-flying, fastbreak dunk by Mason.

"I preached so much about us needing to come out and be the aggressor in the first four minutes of the second half, but those first eight or nine minutes, they really took it to us," Appalachian State coach Buzz Peterson said.

After Leach made consecutive 3-pointers to bring the Mountaineers within 50-42, the Cowboys scored nine in a row -- seven from the foul line -- to widen the lead to 17 with 11 minutes to play. Appalachian State got no closer then eight after that.

In the first game Friday, Idaho beat Oral Roberts 71-70 in overtime. Idaho will play Oklahoma State on Saturday, with ORU playing Appalachian State.
