Jayhawks rebound from 22-point loss

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) -- The 15 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots were fine by Nick Collison.

But what really made the freshman forward happy was a much lower number on his line score from Kansas' 89-74 win Monday night over Colorado: one personal foul.

"I've had terrible foul trouble -- everybody knows that," the 6-foot-9 Collison said. "I felt like I was going to set a record for fouling out of games. But I've had three games in a row now where I haven't been in foul trouble. I think it's just me getting used to the play."

Thirteen of Collison's rebounds came on the defensive end. His only offensive rebound came on a putback dunk that capped a critical 8-0 second-half run for the Jayhawks (No. 11 ESPN/USA Today, No. 12 AP)

"I like to see those big rebounding numbers at either end of the floor," said Kansas coach Roy Williams, whose team was coming off an 81-59 loss Saturday at Missouri -- the Jayhawks' worst defeat since 1990. "If I were going to single out one player tonight, it would be Nick Collison. He put together a great line."

Center Eric Chenowith's 18 points led Kansas (16-3, 5-1 Big 12 Conference), which won despite going nearly five minutes without a basket midway through the second half.

The Buffaloes (11-7, 2-4) cut Kansas' 16-point halftime lead to 59-55 on Jamahl Mosley's basket from the lane with 11:07 remaining.

But the Jayhawks responded with an 8-0 run, capped by Collison's dunk, to pad its lead back to 67-55 with 8:34 left.

During the run, Kenny Gregory hit two free throws with 9:57 remaining and broke Kansas' field goal drought with a thundering dunk less than a minute later. After the surge, Colorado was unable to get the margin below double figures.

"We were feeling all right when it was 59-55, but we weren't going to feel good until we got the lead," Mosley said. "They just made some shots at crucial times."

Mosley and Jacquay Walls led Colorado with 19 points each. Walls, the Big 12's most recent Player of the Week, has scored 51 points in Colorado's last two games.

Luke Axtell had 12 points and freshman Drew Gooden finished with 11 for the Jayhawks.

Kansas led 48-32 after a sloppy first half in which the Jayhawks committed 11 turnovers. Colorado wasn't able to capitalize, though, shooting just 36 percent (13-for-36) from the field and 40 percent (6-for-15) from the foul line.

The Buffaloes finished the game at 39 percent (29-for-75) from the field and 56 percent (14-for-25) from the line. They were also outrebounded 31-22 at their offensive end.

"I was happy with our intensity in both halves," coach Ricardo Patton said. "But you've got to finish your shots, and we didn't."

The Buffaloes led 18-17 on Mosley's leaner from the lane with 11:11 left in the half. But they missed their next six shots as Kansas went on an 8-0 run, part of a 19-5 surge that gave the Jayhawks a 36-23 lead with 4:59 remaining.

That surge closed with another 8-0 run, capped by Kirk Hinrich's 16-foot jumper.

"We made a great run at the end of the first half and another one in the second half," Chenowith said. "You'd want to play like that the whole game, but sometimes we just play in spurts."
