COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- It was just another early-season
blowout, yet Maryland (No. 16 ESPN/USA Today, No. 14 AP) got the desired results out of Sunday's 100-48 victory over Coastal Carolina.
If nothing else, the Terrapins' 72nd consecutive non-conference
win at home provided them with a jolt of confidence before the
Atlantic Coast Conference portion of the schedule.

"It's a good way to end this part of our season," Maryland
coach Gary Williams said. "Now we can start the ACC with a very
positive feeling."
Juan Dixon had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Lonny Baxter
scored 10 of his 14 points in the decisive first half for the
Terrapins (11-2).
Coastal Carolina (2-9) missed its first nine shots and had six
turnovers in falling behind 16-0. Maryland led 44-20 at halftime,
then opened the second half with an 11-0 run to go ahead by 35.
Next up for the Terrapins: North Carolina State on the road
Thursday night.
"We're playing well. We've been showing great defense and are
scoring some points," Baxter said. "Of course, the ACC is going
to be a lot tougher."
Everyone on the roster scored for the Terrapins. Williams said
that should make practice this week a lot more tolerable for his
role players.
"It always feels good when all the guys get to contribute,"
the coach said. "We want to have great practices now, and
hopefully this game will help."
Maryland has won five straight and eight of nine. The 72-game
run, the longest of its kind in the nation, is safe through this
season because the Terrapins' only remaining non-ACC game is at
Temple.
Brandon Newby led Coastal Carolina with 13 points.
"Maryland is just awful good. They're playing well and they
defend well," Coastal Carolina coach Pete Strickland said. "Our
effort was good; our execution wasn't."
Baxter had a dunk and a layup in Maryland's opening 16-point
run, which finally ended on a 3-pointer by Newby with 7:16 gone. It
was 29-11 before Baxter scored six points during a 9-2 spurt that
boosted the margin to 25 points.
Coastal Carolina shot 28 percent in the first half and had 12
turnovers.
Maryland starting quarterback Calvin McCall, playing in his
second game for the basketball team, had eight points and six
assists.
