LSU sending 20 athletes to event

Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. -- LSU's track and field teams are sending a total of 20 athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend in Fayetteville, Ark.

The top-ranked Lady Tigers will send 11, and the fifth-ranked men's squad will send nine.

"I believe this is the most athletes we have ever sent to the national championships,'' coach Pat Henry said.

Last year's squad, with 17, had been the school's previous record for athletes entering the NCAA Indoor Championships.

Henry said only two -- Marian Burnett, in the 800 meters and half-mile, and Traun Smith, in the triple jump -- are seniors. "It's a very young, but talented group of athletes we'll be bringing to the meet,'' he said.

Burnett enters the meet with the NCAA's top time this season in the 800 meters, and will be defending her indoor national title in the event.

Muna Lee, the defending national champion in the indoor 200 meters, qualified in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes and enters the meet with the nation's top times in both events.

LoLo Jones has the nation's fifth-fastest time in the 60-meter hurdles after winning her second straight SEC title in the event two weeks ago.

Hazelann Regis, the SEC champion in the 400 meters, enters the NCAA Championships with the nation's fourth fastest time in the event.

Nicole Toney leads the NCAA in the triple jump at 44-5{, reached in last week's LSU Last Chance Meet.

Quarter-milers and horizontal jumpers are the men's team best chances for scoring.

Pete Coley, second in the 400-meters at least year's indoor championships, has the nation's fifth-fastest time this season, and freshman Kelly Willie holds the nation's eighth-fastest time this year.

They and Marlon Greensword and Bennie Brazell hold the nation's second-fastest time this season in the 400-meter relay.

John Moffitt and LeJuan Simon both qualified in the long and triple jumps. Moffitt, SEC champion in long jump, is undefeated in the event this season and holds the nation's top long jump mark.

Simon, returning to competition after an injury which sidelined him for two weeks, has the season's fifth-best distance in the triple jump.
