HONOLULU -- Hawaii has hired San Diego State's John Nelson as its new men's tennis coach, athletic director Herman Frazier
said Monday.
Nelson replaces Jim Schwitters, the NCAA's winningest coach, who is retiring this month after 38 seasons.
Nelson just completed his 10th season at San Diego State, where he led the Aztecs to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Prior
to SDSU, he served as coach of UC-Davis, winning an NCAA Division II team title in 1990.
He also coached at Cal State Hayward, where he also played and earned a bachelor's degree in physical education. He has a masters
in education from Stanford.
