RECAP | BOX SCORE WORCESTER, Mass. -- Jim Abbott scored twice, including the game-winner with 2:39 left Sunday, as New Hampshire beat Cornell 4-3 to earn a trip to the NCAA Frozen Four.
UNH (30-6-3) will play in the national semifinals at St. Paul, Minn., on April 4 against Maine, which beat Boston University 4-3 earlier Sunday. Michigan will play Minnesota in the other semifinal.
Colin Hemingway also had a pair of goals and Matt Carney stopped 15 shots as the Wildcats, the top-ranked team in the nation, won their 10th consecutive game. UNH has not appeared in the Frozen Four since 1999, when it lost to Maine in the title game.
Matt Underhill stopped 20 shots, and Stephen Baby, Sam Paolini and Shane Palahicky scored for Cornell (25-8-2).
After a furious first period in which five goals were scored, the teams settled down for a scoreless second. It stayed that way until Palahicky scored for Cornell to tie it at 3 with 6:43 left.
Travis Bell took a shot from the left point, and Palahicky tried to tip it between his legs past a screened goalie. Carney stopped the original shot, but the rebound rolled off to his left and Palahicky swatted it into the net.
The game seemed headed for overtime until Abbott beat Underhill with a low shot from the right circle.
Cornell beat Quinnipiac 6-1 on Saturday, and New Hampshire had a bye to Sunday's game.
Hemingway scored his first goal of the game and 32nd of the season to tie it at 2 at the 6:29 mark of the first.
It was 2-2 when New Hampshire took advantage of a 5-on-3 advantage to take the lead for good. Sean Collins passed it from behind the net to Hemingway in front, and he knocked it off Underhill's skate to make it 3-2 with 8:38 left in the first.
Darren Haydar assisted on both Hemingway goals to give him 66 points for the season -- the most in the nation. |
