Tigers snap UNC's 37-game ACC win streak

ESPN.com news services

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Nancy Augustyniak scored a goal and assisted on another as fourth-ranked Clemson upset No. 1 North Carolina 2-1 on Wednesday.

North Carolina had won 37 consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference matches dating back to a 3-2 loss to Duke on Oct. 19, 1994. Clemson and Duke are the only teams in history to defeat North Carolina in ACC play.

With the win, Clemson improves its record to 7-0 on the year 2-0 in the ACC. North Carolina falls to 6-1 this season, 1-1 in the ACC. Clemson is ranked fourth in the NSCAA poll and fifth in the Soccer America listing. North Carolina is ranked first in both polls. The Tar Heels are the defending NCAA Champions.

North Carolina scored first as Jena Kluegel sent the ball in on a corner kick. Maggie Tomecka flicked the ball to Anne Remy who scored from six yards 33:31 into the match.

Augustyniak got the equalizer -- on a penalty kick -- at the 61:12 mark. Augustyniak sent in the free kick after Deliah Arrington was brought down in the box by North Carolina goalkeeper Kristin DePlanchett.

Arrington then scored the winning goal at the 74:31 mark. Taking a pass from Augustyniak, Arrington's shot from 25 yards sailed into the lower right corner of the net.

"The key to this victory was guts," Clemson coach Ray Leone said. "Our team showed a commitment for 90 minutes. I am so proud of them.

"This win is for my wife Tracey who started this program in 1994. It killed her that she could not be here. She is in Sydney for the Olympics. She called the team before the game and wished them luck. I am especially happy for this senior class."
