Dr. Jack: Collins still breathes fire

Doug Collins
Doug Collins is all smiles after becoming the head coach of the Wizards.
People simply do not change their personality. Doug Collins is a very intense, high-strung guy. His considerable time as an NBA announcer has highlighted his intelligence and the insight he has into basketball. He was a very valuable commodity on television for that reason. He brings all of that to coaching, for better or worse. I would not expect him to be any different in any coaching capacity now than he has been in the past. Doug will be as demanding as he always has been. He will institute the style he wants to play and insist that his team plays that way.

Whether he is going to have the players who will be able to repeat the turnarounds he was able to oversee in Chicago and Detroit is unknown. At those stops he had some fairly notable players waiting for him. He had legitimate superstars -- Michael Jordan and Grant Hill -- in both cities. He won't have one in Washington next season. That, particularly, is going to make coaching the Washington Wizards a very difficult challenge. You simply can't win in the NBA without quality players and the Wizards' roster, with very few exceptions, is bereft.

Not having talked to Michael Jordan or Doug Collins, I can't be sure what their plan is. It's clear they need better personnel immediately. I'm still extremely skeptical that Michael will play again. He would certainly improve the talent, but not to a level where the Wizards would make the playoffs.

Until Washington is able to truly upgrade their talent, it is going to be an extremely challenging coaching job where it will be very difficult to achieve any success. Collins would not have taken the opportunity if he didn't think he could succeed with it. But succeed or fail, don't look for a significantly mellower Doug Collins. People don't tend to change and I haven't seen any evidence that suggests Collins will lose any of the intensity we have seen in his other coaching stints.
