Fans: Sixers mortgaged future for short term

ESPN.com

Here's what you had to say about the Sixers' acquisition of Dikembe Mutombo as part of a six-player trade with the Hawks on Thursday:

This reeks like Limburger cheesesteak
Billy King and Pat Croce will have to start hanging out with Jerry Krause pretty soon. This trade stinks to high heaven. Ratliff gets injured and the next week they trade him for the guy who served as his replacement at the All-Star Game. Where is the loyalty to the players? To make matters worse, the only reason the Sixers are a contender is because of Theo's hard work and the great improvements in his game. But now Theo will have to watch the playoffs from home. The only post- season event he will attend in the next few years is the NBA lottery drawing. The free agent gods are watching you Philly … Chris Webber knows who is naughty and who is nice!

Sixers better reap dividends now
Probably good for the short term, but could kill us in the long run. I love the Rattler. Great shot blocker, team player. Second favorite Sixer behind Iverson. Mutombo has been great, but he's old and he's gonna want a mint at the end of the year. With Ratliff we could have won the East. However, with Mutombo we have a better chance of winning it all. The Sixers better win it all this year, because they may have mortgaged the future. Good luck Dikembe, I hope every game you have in a Sixers' uniform is as good as this past All-Star game. Good luck and God Bless the Rattler! You will be missed.

Hawks score a coup
Hats off to the Hawks on this deal. Thumbs down to owner Pat Croce who in my opinion has done a great disservice to the Sixers and their fans. The Sixers won't win the championship this year, and they will see Mutombo go strolling back off to the warm weather (and a long term contract)during the off season. As for the Hawks, they couldn't have got a better deal than they did. Theo Ratliff is solid, and will continue to get better, as he has every year. When Ratliff reaches his full potential in this league, Mutombo will probably be about ready to retire as the only player to never commit a foul. Yeah right!

Who's afraid of the big, bad West now?
At first, I wasn't so sure. Now I like the trade. Mutombo and Ratliff are almost interchangeable. Theo scores a little more but Mutombo leads the league in rebounds. Both are good shot blockers. In the case of Toni Kukoc, this should be a good situation for him. It is difficult for him to thrive here in Philly because Larry Brown likes George Lynch for his toughness and hussle. I'm going to miss Theo. He had vastly improved his game and he will only get better. The trade is good for both teams. The Western Conference doesn't seem too scary now.

Sixers will feel ripple effect of bad trade
I don't like the trade. The Sixers have won 41 games so far this season including games against the supposedly dominant Western Conference teams. They have done it with different players coming off the bench when injuries have sidelined the starters. Who's going to come off the bench if the 35-year-old Mutombo gets hurt? Additionally, the Sixers had become a stable team who the local fans could identify with. Trading away four of those players brings the mercenary business part of the NBA to the forefront. With this trade and Croce calling it his last year, the gypsy in Larry Brown may come out this summer.

Box out the Knicks on Mutombo
I think Croce made this move with only this season in mind. He didn't really consider the future of the team too much. With the season that the Sixers are having, he probably feels this is their best chance at the title. And acquiring Mutombo helps that cause. Also the Sixers have been winning without Theo. Kukoc has only occasionally produced, while Nazr and Pepe have been on the bench most of the season. So, trading these players doesn't hurt too much. Plus, it's better that the Sixers get Mutombo instead of the Knicks. Although it's somewhat sad to see Ratliff traded during his best pro season, Mutombo will create a bigger presence in the middle of the Sixers' already tough defense. He's also a little better than Theo offensively. Good trade...for this season. Go Sixers!

A great deal for Philly
I think the Sixers made out in the deal. First of all Mutombo is a proven rebounder and a defensive force like Theo. The only drawback between the two is age, but than Dikembe is bigger and stronger. Kukoc and Mcleod might even themselves out. Nazr Mohammed is young, but the Sixers already have Todd McCullough whom Larry Brown really likes. Brown has always mentioned that he wanted someone to take Nazr. Pepe Sanchez was only around because "Speedy" Claxton got hurt. All in all, I feel a great trade for the Sixers.

Sixers still no match for the Bucks
Philadelphia made a mistake. The Bucks are the team that will serve as the biggest threat to the Sixers in the East. The Bucks shoot jumpers and don't have a post-up game anyway. Kukoc would of hurt the Bucks more than Mutumbo will.

'Fiddle' with chemistry, fizzle in playoffs
I don't think that was fair to Theo. He has been there from the start of this Sixers' progression. He should have been allowed to stay. What exactly will Mutombo bring? So what if he gets 16 rebounds? So Allen will get 10 more shots a game? Since he can score about as much as Theo could, why make this deal? In a word, the Sixers just f'd up the chemistry and they won't win.

Just more ammunition to face Shaq
Mutombo gives you exactly what Ratliff gives except he is a little smarter on the defensive end. I rarely see Dike in early foul trouble. Theo is a very aggressive defensive player and that keeps him off the court but give him a lot of blocked shots. Dike is long and huge and can slow the centers and power forwards of the West down some. He doesn't want the ball, just blocks and boards. He will fit in perfect and the only down side is that he might be too rich to sign with us in the summer. The Sixers have just won the East and maybe the championship. Shaq, look out. We beat you without a true center. Now we have one of the best. Look out, NBA, the Sixers are for real.

No title guarantees here
Well, the Sixers did lose a lot of good players. (Losing) Ratliff and Kukoc will hurt them, I think. Mutombo does make up for Ratliff's absence though. Nothing against McLeod, but he won't make up for Kukoc's absence. Kukoc is a tough guy to lose. I think the Sixers will still win their division, I'm not so sure about the championship though. They could, no doubt about it. Iverson is the best player around. The Hawks made a killing on the deal. Mohammed and Sanchez need a chance to showcase their talents. Only time will tell who got the better deal.

Georgia fan: Peachy deal for Sixers
I'm a huge Sixers fan and we just made ourselves stronger. Ratliff will be missed but how can you turn your back on the three-time defensive player of the year? Now in the playoffs we have a big time presence, a rebounder, a decent scorer and a 7-footer who plays like one. Imagine playing in the finals and putting Mutombo at the 5 and Geiger at the 4. It's the Philly version of the twin towers with A.I. tossing it up. That team will compete and win versus the west. Once again it's on.

Short-sighted Sixers
If the Sixers were really thinking of a championship they would have maintained the nucleus that has made them the most winning team in the NBA this season. Granted Mutombo brings a dominant presence on the boards to the team. Yet offensively, and arguably defensively, he is no better than Ratliff, who is moving into his prime as we speak. The one month that Ratliff will gone would not have mattered. The Sixers win no matter what, but now, although we have a center, we have dismantled what could have been a championship caliber team for years to come.

Dikembe's 'finger' fit for a ring
I am a die-hard Sixers fan and have thought for several years now that Philly needed a true center to get to the next level. Theo was great for Philly but he was lacking in his low post game and does not play well with his back to the basket. Granted he's a heck of a defender but I think Mutombo will add that extra stamp in the middle and will also improve his scoring with the likes of Iverson and Snow doing what they do the best. By the way, Philly fans will eat-up and truly adopt Motumbo's "Not In My New house" finger wave immediately after his very first rejection. Go Philly and watch out L.A.

Pack your bags now, Croce
What are the 76ers thinking of? They obviously aren't concerned about the future. This trade will hurt them in the long run. If I was Pat Croce, I would resign now before he gets run out of town when Philly doesn't win the title.

Traitors!
I cannot believe that the Hawks would trade away one of the only bright spots on the entire team for Theo and Tony. I am a native of Atlanta and the things that the Hawks and Falcons do dumbfound me. I am beginning to hate sports in Atlanta. I think that we have people in the Hawk organization that work for Philly. I am sick!
