Bob Knight in the NBA? Are you crazy?

ESPN.com

So, are Mark Cuban and Isiah Thomas crazy for inviting former Indiana coach Bob Knight to the NBA? We asked ESPN.com users for their thoughts on the General finding a new job in the NBA, and here are some of the better ones. Thanks for the e-mails.
Rasheed Wallace
Rasheed Wallace and Derrick Coleman? Bob Knight could teach them a few things...

Bobby Knight would be perfect for the NBA. This league's already got players who choke their coaches (payback time, Bobby Boy!). And Knight could easily erase Rasheed's technical fouls record by the All-Star game -- if he lasted that long. Better to retire, buddy. If you can't handle 19-year-olds who idolize you, 27-year-old millionaires will eat you alive.

Fort Lee, N.J.

Average ticket price to see a game: $30.00
Average price for a team jersey: $40.00
Being able to see Allen Iverson show up late to practice with Bob Knight as the head coach of the Sixers: Priceless.

Paul Clinton
Atlanta, Ga.

Bob Knight in the NBA? That's GRRRRRREAT!!! It's especially great if Mr. Knight joins the Pacers, and here's why: The Pacers have three very young players on their team with no college experience. Even the head coach has little college experience (not to say he is not qualified). So Bob Knight would fill the void that came with signing players straight out of high school. The Pacers couldn't make a better move than to hire him immediately.

Oberlin, Ohio

Look what happened when Dennis Rodman signed with the Bulls: Not only was he part of a franchise that won three more titles, but they also now hold the NBA's best win-loss record thanks to his help. Bobby Knight IS the Dennis Rodman of coaching. Hated by administrators, loved by fans, it's the Worm all over again! Knight's next move should be to the Mavericks or the Pacers. True that he may have to redeem himself for what he's done, but a flawless 2000-01 season and the glow of a Larry O'Brien trophy in his hands should do the trick!

Bob Knight is welcome to tear apart any NBA team with the exception of the Portland Trail Blazers, my favorite team. Knight's ego and temper wouldn't last five minutes into a practice with players at the NBA level. He would be a Dennis Rodman or Isaiah Rider on the coaching staff.

Geoff I.
Portland, Ore.

I think its a good idea. He was a good disciplinarian in college. These kids today need that. That's why parents of basketball players send their kids to Indiana. The NBA needs a little of that, too. He would be good to stand up to people and not let them get away with what they get away with now. A lot of that is stupidity.

Elena Padolko
Plainville, Ct.

That would be great because unlike what happened in the Sprewell incident, Bob (I mean, Mr. Knight) would be the first coach suspended for beating up or choking a player. I would love to see that happen with today's athletes. They would get a taste of their own medicine.

South Carolina

I realize the Pacers have young players now, but do you think those millionaires will tolerate Knight screaming at them? I think not. Knight is an authoritarian. He needs absolute control. His style is definitely not for the PRO game. I think it would be best for Knight to catch on at another university (too bad Northwestern's or Notre Dame's spot wasn't still available). Regardless of whether he catches on in the NBA or NCAA, Knight's legacy is secure.

John Stoltz
Chicago, Ill.

As a lifetime Pistons fan and a recent IU grad, I would absolutely love to see coach Knight join Isiah's coaching staff with the Pacers. There would never be a dull moment on the sideline, it would give the Pacers more media attention, which they desperately need, and would probably turn out to be a very good mix of personality to coach the variety of veterans and young players the Pacers have.

But my gut tells me coach Knight loves the college game too much to bother with the pros.

Chicago, Ill.

Latrell Sprewell better watch out! Seriously, I'd love to see Knight on the bench with the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers have three players in Jermaine O'Neal, Al Harrington, and Jonathan Bender who have no college experience, and I feel Knight would play a positive developmental role for them. He would also be in an assistant's position, which for anyone, even Knight, would be humbling after 35 years as a head coach.

Chris Bottomley
Beavercreek, Ohio

Bob Knight should not be able to coach until he gets anger management help. I can just see him grabbing Karl Malone or Alonzo Mourning. He would get his head ripped off! He is not made for the NBA game, and from what his teams have done over the past few years, he obviously was not made for college anymore. Why would you go to Indiana University, when you can go to Duke, get as good an education, and get taught by a much more stable coach. Get over it, Indiana Hoosier fans, your team will be better in the long run without him!

Adam Weber
Terryville, N.Y.

That's just crazy. I have been a loyal fan to the futile Mavs but if Mark Cuban ever comes close to talking with Knight about a position I will find another team to cheer. Cuban must learn that NBA fans want a winning team and not an owner who thinks his team is his toy. Dennis Rodman and Bobby Knight should be on the same team, but NOT IN DALLAS.

Paul Casey
Austin, Texas

If Bobby Knight gets an NBA job, I hope he seriously considers getting a good life insurance policy, because unlike college, they hit BACK in the NBA.

Amin Elhassan
Atlanta, Ga.

Knight (if I can be so bold as to call him that) once said he could never coach in the pros because he just couldn't look down the bench at guys making more money than him and expect them to listen. I think he's right. He'd be to the sideline what Rodman was on the court: a circus freak. Audiences would show, cameras would dolly in, just to see him lose his mind and nothing else. Could he last as a head coach? Could he make any difference as an assistant? No. His only value beyond circus freak is breaking Dean Smith's record and he can't do that in the NBA. I don't think Knight takes a job and if he does I don't think he stays long.

James Brown
Emeryville, Calif.

Why not? With Bob Knight on the Mavs, Don Nelson might have a tag team partner the next time he tries to get in Karl Malone's face during a game.

Seth Spiegal
Boston, Mass.

Warped. Demented. Racist. Psychotic. Say what you will about Bob Knight, but the fat cat in the red sweater can flat out coach. He won the national championship in 1987 with a mediocre cast, proof of his ability to both teach great fundamentals, and coach that talent in the big game. While he is a very fiery leader, his credentials demand respect -- even from the spoiled millionaires who hoop it up in the NBA today.

Matthew Nichols
Groton, Ct.

I'd love to see Bobby Knight as coach of the Washington Wizards. I would pay money to see the first practice Rod Strickland is late for.

Michael Kort
Blacksburg, Va.
