Knicks president Scott Layden and Mavs owner Mark Cuban stayed up late Wednesday night discussing a trade that would send Juwan Howard to the Knicks in return for Marcus Camby, Shandon Anderson and Charlie Ward. By late Wednesday night those talks had stalled, according to the Newark Star Ledger.
However, it appears that those talks are heating up again as the trade deadline nears, this time including the Nuggets. A high placed source inside the Nuggets confirmed to ESPN.com that the Nuggets are talking with the Mavs about a trade that would give Juwan Howard, Nick Van Exel and Raef LaFrentz new homes. In addition, the Mavs are still talking with the Knicks about a three way, including Denver, that would send Van Exel to New York and potentially Marcus Camby to Dallas.
Sources say that different variations of the deal exist and some don't include the Knicks at all, instead sending Van Exel, LaFrentz and Tariq Abdul Wahad to Dallas with Howard, Tim Hardaway and Donnell Harvey headed to Denver.
While the source stressed that nothing has been finalized and that the Nuggets are talking to other teams besides the Mavs and Knicks, the talks are serious and could give the Mavs, who would nab LaFrentz and possibly Camby, the big men they covet.
