Mashburn unable to play with illness

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte Hornets forward Jamal Mashburn missed Tuesday night's playoff game against the Orlando Magic with a mild case of anemia.

Mashburn has been ill since Saturday, when he vomited during the first quarter of Game 1. He was taken to a hospital for treatment and held overnight.

He returned to the hospital Tuesday to receive an IV and was diagnosed with mild anemia and a B-12 deficiency.

Dr. Jack Kramer, the team physician, said he would treat Mashburn with fluids and B-12 while trying to cut off acids to his stomach.

Team spokesman Harold Kaufman said Tuesday that Mashburn would be hospitalized overnight.

"He came to shootaround but he didn't come out on the court," Hornets coach Paul Silas said Tuesday. "I don't think he's holding himself out, he wants to play in the worst way. ... We'll just hope he'll be better by (Game 3) Saturday."

Mashburn, Charlotte's leading scorer at 21.5 points a game, was at practice Monday but was limited to stretching and light shooting. He left before the team began scrimmaging and was still feeling ill before Tuesday's game.

Mashburn played 10 minutes in Game 1 of the best-of-five series, but missed all six of his shots. The Hornets still won, 80-79.
