Sunday, April 21 Updated: April 21, 6:20 PM ET Mashburn still hospitalized with virus Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hornets forward Jamal Mashburn was treated in a hospital for a virus Sunday, and the team was hopeful he'll be able to play Game 2 against the Orlando Magic.
Mashburn, Charlotte's leading scorer at 21.5 points a game, felt sick early in Saturday's 80-79 victory over the Magic. He started the game but threw up into a trash can next to the Hornets' bench during a first-quarter timeout.
The teams play again Tuesday.
Mashburn, replaced in the lineup by Lee Nailon on Saturday, was given an IV and taken to the hospital by ambulance. Team spokesman Harold Kaufman said Mashburn, who missed all six of his shot attempts in 10 minutes of play, had a virus.
"He's resting comfortably and is still getting IVs and fluids," Kaufman said. "He should spend the night."
Guard David Wesley felt ill after Saturday's victory and had a hoarse voice Sunday.
Worried about more players getting sick, Hornets coach Paul Silas kept practice short Sunday, with just film sessions and light shooting.
The Magic, meanwhile, took the day off.
Orlando coach Doc Rivers decided late Saturday night to give the team a rest, which forward Tracy McGrady desperately needed.
McGrady has been bothered by a sore back and had to stretch and get ice during the third quarter. Then in the fourth quarter, when the Hornets used George Lynch to guard him, McGrady couldn't handle the physical defense and said he was aching after the game.
"He played me pretty tight and I'm feeling it," said McGrady, who scored 20 points on 8-of-21 shooting. "I need to rest. There is no way I can practice anytime soon. I can barely run through an entire game." |
