ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. -- Washington Wizards guard Jerry Stackhouse was arrested and charged with assault Sunday after he was accused of grabbing a woman at a house he was renting.

Stackhouse, 28, was renting the house near the North Carolina coast, according to a statement from Atlantic Beach Police Chief Scott Kilpatrick.

Stackhouse was told by a female employee of the property manager that he and his guests had to leave around 2:30 p.m., but he apparently believed he had rented it until Monday, Kilpatrick said.

He attempted to grab the lease from the woman, but grabbed her instead, Kilpatrick said.

She felt threatened and went to the magistrate's office to take out a warrant, police said.

Stackhouse surrendered to police -- accompanied by an attorney -- and was released on $2,000 bond.

Wizards spokeswoman Nicole Hawkins said President of Basketball Operations Ernie Grunfeld was sorting out the events.

"At this time we have no information, therefore we have no comment until we talk to somebody to get something," Hawkins told the Washington Post on Sunday.

Stackhouse, who averaged 21.5 points last season, agreed to a two-year contract extension worth about $18 million with the Wizards last month.

Stackhouse was an All-American at North Carolina, leaving after his sophomore season and was the No. 3 pick in the 1995 NBA draft by Philadelphia. He was traded to Detroit during the 1997-98 season, and was a two-time All-Star there before being dealt to Washington before last season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
