As Browns decides, Spurs, Mavs again miss out

Scratch another name off the wish list of the Spurs and Mavs.

P.J. Brown has agreed to re-sign with the New Orleans Hornets, his agent, Mark Bartelstein told NBA Insider Chad Ford.

According to Bartelstein, Brown will sign a four-year, $34 million deal with the team on Wednesday, the first day free agents can officially sign contracts.

Brown was heavily courted by many teams looking for a tough inside presence, including the San Antonio and Dallas. The Spurs also offered Brown a similar deal Friday, but Brown ultimately decided he wanted to end his career at home in New Orleans.

"In the end, his heart was in New Orleans," Bartelstein said about the Louisiana native. "This is his hometown and he wanted to stay involved with the team even after his playing days."

Bartelstein said Brown was intrigued by the Spurs' offer, but the timing just wasn't right.

"They couldn't do anything because they were keeping their options open for Kidd," Bartelstein said. "As time progressed, things started to come into focus with the Hornets. He feels that if everyone is healthy next year, they have a great chance to come out of the East."

Team spokesman Harold Kaufman wouldn't comment. The league's rules on free agency prevent team officials from commenting.

Orlando, Miami and Utah also expressed interest in Brown.

Brown averaged 9.0 rebounds and 10.7 points, and shot a career-high .531 from the field last season as the Hornets, reached the playoffs for the fourth straight season, the team's first in New Orleans.

After being knocked out of the playoffs in the first round by Philadelphia, the Hornets fired coach Paul Silas and hired former Chicago Bulls coach Tim Floyd.

Brown was a second-round draft pick, 29th overall, of the New Jersey Nets in 1992. After playing in Greece in 1992-93, he played with the Nets from 1993-96. He signed with Miami as a free agent in 1996, and was traded to Charlotte in August 2000.

In 762 career NBA games, Brown has averaged 9.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 31.8 minutes.
