Former coach Bristow speaks with Hornets

Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS -- Former Hornets coach Allan Bristow said he has spoken with the team about returning as general manager.

Current general manager Jeff Bower announced his resignation effective after the June 26 NBA draft. Bower plans to become an assistant coach at Penn State.

Under the Hornets' system, the general manager's job entails overseeing scouting and the draft, while Bob Bass, the vice president of basketball operations, handles personnel decisions.

Bristow coached the then-Charlotte Hornets from 1991-96, twice getting to the playoffs. He was fired following the 1995-96 season but said he left on good terms with Bass.

"I have spoken with members of the organization,'' Bristow told The Times-Picayune from his home in Marco Island, Fla. "I am delighted to be a candidate, but it's really difficult for me to say any more because of the way they like to keep things under wrap.''

Bass declined to confirm Bristow's candidacy or discuss other possible candidates.

"I can't say anything about it right now,'' Bass said. "I'd rather not comment on something that's speculation.''

Bristow and Bass have long known each other. Bristow played for the San Antonio Spurs when the Spurs were in the ABA, while Bass held various positions including coach, assistant coach and general manager.

The Hornets also continue to look for a new head coach to replace Paul Silas, who was let go on May 4 when the team declined to renew his contract. The Hornets have held preliminary interviews with Mike Fratello, Brian Hill and Tim Floyd.
