Forte accused of punching man during pickup game

Associated Press

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Joseph Forte was accused of punching a man during a pickup basketball game, resulting in an assault warrant for the Seattle SuperSonics' guard.

Forte, a former North Carolina star, hasn't been served with the misdemeanor warrant.

Maj. Jeff McCracken of the North Carolina campus police said they learned through Forte's lawyer, Bill Blue, that Forte intends to return to campus this week to receive the warrant. He is scheduled to appear in court June 23.

On April 24, Forte was arrested in Maryland on drug and gun charges, and is due in court in July.

In this latest case, James Terrance Gibson, a reserve on the North Carolina football team, told authorities that Forte struck him in the face May 1 at the school's Woollen Gym. Gibson was cut above the right eye and required stitches.

A campus security officer summoned campus police but Forte was gone when they arrived.

Forte left North Carolina after his sophomore year to enter the 2001 NBA draft. He was a first-round pick of the Boston Celtics and was traded to Seattle for the 2002-03 season.
