Majerle is Suns' career leader in 3-pointers made

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Dan Majerle, one of the most popular players ever to wear a Phoenix Suns' uniform, was added to the franchise's 'Ring of Honor' in a boisterous halftime ceremony Sunday night.

"This is awesome, unbelievable,'' Majerle told a cheering, capacity crowd at America West Arena.

Majerle's highlights were featured on the arena's giant video screen, including his memorable dunk over 7-foot, 7-inch Manute Bol. Also shown was then-coach Cotton Fitzsimmons' memorable comment when the fans at the team's 1988 draft booed Majerle's selection as the No. 14 pick overall.

"I think you people will be sorry you ever booed this young man,'' Fitzsimmons told them.

With his emotion, hustle, good looks, outgoing personality, Majerle was a Suns' favorite virtually from the start. Suns owner Jerry Colangelo has said the trade that sent Majerle to Cleveland in 1995 was one of the toughest decisions he's had to make.

Majerle played for Cleveland and Miami before coming back to the Suns to finish his career last season.

"Those are two great organizations,'' Majerle said, "but when I looked down and 'Phoenix Suns' wasn't on my chest, something was missing.''

Seven other people are in the Ring of Honor -- Dick Van Arsdale, Connie Hawkins, Alvan Adams, Paul Westphal, Walter Davis, Tom Chambers, Kevin Johnson and Suns' longtime trainer Joe Proski.

Majerle thanked his parents, his wife, and his four children, as well as just about everyone else in the Suns' organization.

He visits the Suns' offices several times a week.

His popular restaurant and bar, Majerle's, is just down the street from the Arena.

"By the way,'' he told the crowd, "part afterwards.''

Majerle is the Suns' career leader in 3-point field goals made (800) and 3-pointers attempted (2,200). He is fifth in minutes played with 19,409. Majerle is tied with Jason Kidd for the most 3-pointers in a game with eight and attempts with 14.

He also is the Suns' career leader in 3-point field goals made (115) and attempted (324) in the playoffs. His eight 3-pointers against Seattle in Game 5 of the 1993 Western Conference semifinals was an NBA record at the time.

Majerle was named to the NBA all-defensive second team in 1990-91 and 1992-93, and was selected to play in the All-Star Game twice, once as a reserve and as a starter in the 1995 game played at America West.

Several former teammates and Ring of Honor members were there. Among those absent, though, was Charles Barkley. Barkley continues to harbor ill feelings toward Colangelo and has said he would be at Majerle's restaurant for the after-game party.
