Wallace, ref Donaghy reportedly cursed at each other

ESPN.com news services

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The NBA is investigating a reported encounter between Portland Trail Blazer Rasheed Wallace and a referee after Wednesday night's 100-92 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies, a league spokesman said.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said that in a routine report filed after the game, referees mentioned an "incident'' involving Wallace.

The Oregonian reported Friday that the encounter between Wallace and referee Tim Donaghy, who gave Wallace a technical during the game, happened about an hour after the game on the loading dock of the Rose Garden.

Backed by two eyewitness accounts, the newspaper reported Wallace cursed at Donaghy over the technical foul and Donaghy cursed back before leaving the arena. The confrontation never became violent and neither side approached each other.

"We are looking into it, and we are investigating it," NBA spokesman Tim Frank told The Oregonian. "They had a discussion ... how hard and what was said, I don't know."

However, he said the NBA is investigating and will determine whether any disciplinary action will be taken. There was no timetable.

"We are aware that Rasheed had a conversation with the referee post-game and that the league is looking into that,'' said Mike Hanson, spokesman for the Trail Blazers, who declined further comment.

Wallace scored a season-high 38 points and had 10 rebounds in the game, but was handed a technical foul with 9:45 to go in the third by referee Tim Donaghy. The foul appeared to be for Wallace's forceful return of the ball to another referee after he was called for a foul.

Two seasons ago, Wallace earned his temperamental reputation by leading the league with 41 technical fouls and seven ejections.

He has five technicals this season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
