Lopez out for season after tearing knee ligament

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota Timberwolves guard Felipe Lopez will miss the season after tearing a ligament in his left knee.

Lopez injured the knee in the first quarter of Saturday night's 95-83 exhibition loss to the Boston Celtics in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Lopez charged into Boston's Paul Pierce and twisted awkwardly.

An MRI done Sunday revealed that his medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments are torn.

Lopez is the sixth player to do down with an injury for the Timberwolves this preseason. Terrell Brandon (knee) and Joe Smith (groin) will both miss the Oct. 30 opener against Denver. Wally Szczerbiak (toe) is expected to begin practicing again this week. Troy Hudson (groin) has been limited in practice and in preseason games, and guard Randy Livingston (ankle) could be sidelined for more than a week.

Lopez averaged 23.8 minutes and 11.3 points in the Wolves' first four preseason games.
