Sprewell reportedly makes appearance at facility

ESPN.com news services

Latrell Sprewell made his first appearance at the Knicks' practice facility Friday, an unnamed source close to Sprewell told the New York Daily News.

It was the first time Sprewell had been to the training site in Greenburgh, N.Y., since the Knicks fined him $250,000 and ordered him to stay away from the team for an indefinite period of time. The Knicks disciplined Sprewell for failing to report his broken hand promptly. The Knicks are allowing Sprewell to train at the facility when they are on the road. Sprewell was in Milwaukee for most of the week and returned to the New York area only Friday.

According to a story published Sunday in The New York Times, Sprewell has scheduled a news conference for Monday morning in Manhattan -- perhaps as an attempt to reconcile with the Knicks.

"Latrell wants to bring harmony back between himself and the Knicks," Bob Gist, Sprewell's agent, told the newspaper Saturday. "Latrell is willing to let bygones be bygones."

Gist said he did not expect any members of the Knicks organization to attend the news conference.

Sprewell injured his right hand when he slipped and fell aboard his yacht in early September, but the Knicks didn't find out about it until the day before training camp opened Oct. 1.

Sprewell is appealing the fine. He contends the fine was unwarranted because he did not realize the seriousness of his injury. He also will argue that the fine was excessive. Sprewell's fine is believed to be the largest ever imposed by a team against one of its players.

Sprewell worked out for less than an hour, supervised by two Knicks officials, and left, a source told the Daily News. He is still reportedly upset with the club for not letting him rejoin his teammates.

The Knicks would not confirm or deny Sprewell's appearance in Greenburgh. The team also refused to comment on Sprewell's scheduling of a news conference Monday, at which he might address his relationship with the Knicks.

There has been speculation that Sprewell will officially return early next week. He is getting his cast removed from his right hand in the next 10 days. Sprewell is expected to be sidelined for the first two weeks of the regular season.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
