Investigators suspect Dabord died of drug overdose

Associated Press

SAN DIEGO -- Medical investigators are running tests to determine whether a drug overdose killed the brother of former NBA basketball player Bison Dele, an official said Monday.

Miles Dabord died Friday night at Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista, a day after his mother said she planned to remove him from life support.

The 35-year-old computer operator was found in a coma nearly two months after returning from the islands of French Polynesia, where he sailed with his brother and two other companions who have been missing for 11 weeks.

An autopsy conducted Saturday failed to determine the cause of death, said Mike Workman, a spokesman for San Diego County.

Investigators suspect Dabord died of a drug overdose, Workman said. They are now waiting the results of toxicology tests, which take at least two weeks, he said.

Investigators in French Polynesia believe Dele, his girlfriend, Serena Karlan, and the boat's captain, Bertrand Saldo, were killed at sea on July 7. Dele, who played with the Chicago Bulls and other NBA teams, used to be known as Brian Williams before changing his name to acknowledge his Native American ancestry.

Dabord was the only other person aboard the catamaran when his companions disappeared.

Dabord, who changed his name from Kevin Williams, aroused suspicion earlier this month when he signed his brother's name to try to buy $152,000 worth of gold in Phoenix. At the time, Dabord was briefly questioned, but authorities released him and he went to Mexico, where was slipped into a coma Sept. 14.
