DENVER -- Jeff Bzdelik, currently a scout with the team, will be offered the head coaching job of the Denver Nuggets, the Denver Post reported in its editions Wednesday. The Post attributed the report to NBA sources familiar with the negotiations. Bzdelik, 49, is considered one of the best defensive coaches in the NBA, a reputation earned in his six years as an assistant with the Miami Heat. The Post reports that the Nuggets are planning to introduce Bzdelik at a news conference next week, which will culminate an eight-month search for a new coach after Dan Issel resigned last December. Details of the contract are still being determined. "I'm not a Hall of Fame coach. I'm not a former player in the NBA. From Day One in this business, I've been told I'm not good enough. I'm not a big name to announce at a press conference,'' Bzdelik told the Post on Tuesday. "But I've always found a way to succeed in this league.'' Bzdelik was hired by general manager Kiki Vandeweghe last summer as a scout at a salary of $500,000. His work in the summer leagues with some of the franchise's younger players has impressed Vandeweghe. Bzdelik took the lead in the search only after Eddie Jordan of New Jersey, Donn Nelson of Dallas, Phil Johnson of Utah and Del Harris of Dallas all withdrew their names from consideration. |
