Dutt: 'We're not giving up the last two years'

ESPN.com news services

DENVER -- Point guard Nick Van Exel is still a member of the Denver Nuggets, and may not be going anywhere for a while.

While Van Exel is willing to "rework or restructure" the final two years of his contract, he remains adamant about not totally opting out of the last two years, ESPN's David Aldridge reported on Tuesday.

"We're not giving up the last two years," his agent, Tony Dutt, told Aldridge. "In all honesty, that's more me than Nick. Nick asked me my opnion and I gave it to him. I just think that's too big a risk."

Earlier this month, Van Exel had said he'd be willing to void the final two years of his contract, which would pay him $12.8 and $13.7 million in 2003 and 2004.

Sources tell Aldridge that if a deal is done, it's more likely that Van Exel would be moved to a team in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks, who are shopping several of their players, are apparently not one of the finalists.

The Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers remain possibilities for Van Exel, who has asked to be traded. Several teams have indicated to the Nuggets that unless Van Exel gives up those last two years, they won't be willing to make a deal. Players cannot renegotiate contracts from March 1 through June 30 and can only renegotiate deals if their team is under the salary cap.
