Wizards downplay Barkley's comments

ESPN.com news services

Charles Barkley is once again speculating about returning to the NBA -- but the team he is thinking about joining is not holding its collective breath.

Barkley told HBO's Real Sports late last week that he might become Michael Jordan's teammate with the Washington Wizards once he gets in better shape.

Over the last several months, Barkley has stated several times that he is intrigued by the idea of coming back. However, Barkley says he needs to get in better shape before such a comeback is possible. Barkley told HBO he is down to 290 pounds.

"I'm thinking about it," Barkley told HBO. "I miss playing. I feel bad Michael is struggling and I think I could help him, but I need to lose another 25 pounds before I could help him."

But two members of the Wizards organization told the Washington Post that the team has no interest in signing Barkley.

"You got to love Charles. He's always going to have fun," Wizards coach Doug Collins told the newspaper. "The good part about it is he's always going to create a reaction from somebody. He throws something out there and wants people to follow it up."

Even if the Wizards were seriously interested in Barkley, they would have to pay a luxury tax, which is not something the team wants to do, according to the Post. Barkley would have to be paid the veteran minimum annual salary of $1 million, which would force the Wizards to pay the tax.

Jordan, a close friend of Barkley, returned to the NBA this season after a three-year absence. Barkley retired after the 1999-2000 season. The two future Hall of Famers have never been teammates in the NBA, but did play together for the original Dream Team at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona.

Barkley is currently working as an NBA analyst for TNT. Jordan's Wizards have struggled early this season.
