Shaq says Jackson questions his effort, performance

Associated Press

PHOENIX -- Shaquille O'Neal is unhappy with what he perceives as unwarranted, persistent criticism from Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson.

O'Neal's feelings surfaced in a story Friday in The Los Angeles Times.

Asked about the situation before Friday night's game against Phoenix, O'Neal said, "It ain't over."

"I don't ever start it, ever," O'Neal said, "but I won't stand for it. A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything."

Jackson wouldn't talk about the situation, but he said in the Times article that he needs to stay on O'Neal to get him into playing shape and push him to a higher level of play. The story also said Jackson fined O'Neal for the second day of a two-day absence from the team for the birth of his child.

Asked if Jackson motivated him, O'Neal said, "I don't need no motivation."

O'Neal has averaged 30.6 points, 12 rebounds and 3.43 blocked shots as the Lakers have gotten off to a 7-0 start.

"I am mad about everything," O'Neal told the Times. "I'm mad about a lot of stuff. You'll see. It'll all come out."
