Gentry on Odom: 'I still believe in the kid'

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Clippers coach Alvin Gentry met with Lamar Odom for about an hour Tuesday, and said afterward he doesn't believe the suspended star has a drug problem.

Odom, the Clippers' leading scorer last season, met with Gentry and general manager Elgin Baylor during a light practice session, and left without speaking to reporters.

Odom, who turned 22 Tuesday, violated the NBA's anti-drug policy for the second time in nine months, and began serving his league-imposed five-game suspension Monday.

No other details were announced. The NBA does not disclose information about the testing or treatment of any player in the program.

"It was fine," Gentry said of the meeting. "I'm not going to tell you what was discussed. It was a good meeting, we talked about some things. There are corrections that have to be done, he understands that. I still believe in the kid, I think he'll get everything done he has to get done.

"Me personally, I don't think it's anything that would merit rehab. It's just something he has to take care of."

When asked if Odom was contrite, Gentry replied: "I think embarrassed is a better word. He knows he let his teammates and the organization down, and I think he wants to correct that. He is a good kid, there's not a malicious bone in his body.

"He has to take on the responsibility of being an adult. He knows the difference between right and wrong. He's got to do the right thing. I truly believe he will."

The Clippers, who went 1-4 during Odom's suspension last season, beat Atlanta 109-86 without him Monday night.

In his team's first three games this season, all losses, Odom made only 16 of 52 shots (30.8 percent) while averaging 14.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 38.7 minutes.
