Broken wrist helps Rose work on right hand

INDIANAPOLIS -- Jalen Rose is making a quick recovery from a broken left wrist and might be able to join the Indiana Pacers' lineup late next week.

Rose, the NBA's most improved player last season, was injured during the opening exhibition game Oct. 11. He no longer wears a cast on his shooting arm and has begun light workouts with the team.

"I may come back in four games, I may come back the fifth game," he said before the Pacers' shootaround in San Antonio on Tuesday.

"We're going to play it by ear, but I'm going to come back as soon as I can," he said.

Indiana lost its opener to San Antonio 98-85 Tuesday night. The second game is Thursday at Dallas, with the Pacers' home opener Saturday night against Chicago. The fourth and fifth games are Nov. 8 against Milwaukee and Nov. 10 at Washington.

During his recuperation, Rose has tried to develop better skills with his right hand.

"I'm a total lefty," he said. "Now I'm becoming more ambidextrous and thinking more of using both hands, and anytime you do that, it helps.

"You just have to take it as an opportunity to develop something else in your game," said Rose, who last season displaced Reggie Miller as Indiana's leading scorer. "A lot of times as you get older you don't get better. I want to continue to get better."

The Pacers could have used Rose Tuesday night. Miller had 27 points against the Spurs, but the Pacers managed only eight points from its reserves.

"We realized who we should get the ball to. We did a good job setting screens for Reggie and taking advantages of mismatches," said Austin Croshere, who started at forward and scored 17 points. "A guy like Reggie, anytime he's on, you can put two guys on the block, set screens for him and he's going to make shots."
