Camp question
What is the unhappiness of Gary Payton going to mean to this team, a surprise visitor to the playoffs last season? Payton is irked management is not giving him a contract extension, and he has blown up before when he is not completely happy.
Camp project
The team now has two centers -- Calvin Booth and Jerome James -- making a combined $68 million. One of them needs to start playing like a starting center for this team to continue its success of last season, when the Sonics went 45-37 under head coach Nate McMillan to earn the West's No. 7 playoff seed.

FANTASY GAMES KEY CAMPER

Who to watch: Few teams have as many average post players as the Sonics, so this would be a good time for Calvin Booth, in Year 2 after signing a big contract, to perform. Booth can rebound and block a shot, but he did little of either while playing only 15 games in an injury-filled year. Look for Booth to be given the chance to earn a starting role. — Eric Karabell

Camp comeback
Rashard Lewis dislocated his shoulder against the Spurs in the playoffs. Because of a contract dispute that lasted almost all summer, Lewis did very little rehab and even less work on the court. The new owner of $60 million, Lewis needs to catch up rather quickly. Also, Vitaly Potapenko is recovering from knee surgery, and his comeback is valuable to the team's interior defense.
Camp controversy
Besides Payton being unhappy, Kenny Anderson also is irked. Traded to the Sonics in the deal that sent Vin Baker to Boston, Anderson is in his contract year and knows he is not going to unseat Payton as the team's starter. The Sonics need him to handle the situation professionally.
