WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Here are five observations of the Miami Heat from training camp:
2. Eddie Jones and Brian Grant have already been warned by Riley that their names will appear in trade rumors all season. Both insist they can handle it. Grant, in particular, says he's "too busy" trying to relocate his game to worry about the possibility of being moved out -- even though he's more likely to be the one peddled as one of the most available big men in the league. To his credit, Grant worked tirelessly in the gym and on the court over the summer after averaging a paltry 9.3 points last season. "I'm trying to get back where I was as a player," he said. "Just trying to get my confidence back, because I think last year I was more of a player that deferred a lot of stuff. Big Zo was in the middle and I was just out on the perimeter. I've got to get back to being more of an assertive player, somebody who's taking control of a certain area, somebody who sees an open shot and takes the open shot." Grant, of course, is going to have do all that at center most of the time, since he'll probably start in Alonzo Mourning's place. 3. We'd love to be able to give you a great read on this team after a week of workouts, but we can't. Too many injuries. The stationary bikes along the baseline at practice are filled like a downtown health club every day with this list of hobblers: Jones (hamstring), Travis Best (calf), Sean Marks (foot), Malik Allen (ankle), Sean Lampley (dehydration), Khalid El-Amin (heel) and Luke Recker (ankle). Particularly discouraging is Best's absence, since he is expected to start for the Heat at the point. 4. Riley remains in regular contact with Mourning and still thinks it's best for all parties for Zo to keep his distance from the team until it returns to Miami next week. "I think it kills him when he comes by here and can't play," he said. "I think it's hard on him, and we've been going through this ourselves, too, as a family. We need a little bit of separation to get these guys not dependant on thinking he's coming back." 5. No, Rasual Butler is not better than Caron Butler. But he probably did have a better Week 1 and will certainly make the team as June's No. 53 pick overall. He has shown a nice perimeter touch, and if you watched the Heat last season you know how big a need that is. It's the same reason why Riley wishes Eddie House was three inches taller, to get House on the court more. Asked if he was surprised by the other Butler's progress, Riley said: "Not now. Early in the summer, when we started to see him play, (we) said this kid's got a chance. I'll be more surprised now if he doesn't continue to improve. I want him to take every open shot he gets." Of course, Riley being Riley and the Butlers being rookies, the coach added: "When we turn the lights on (opening night), we'll see where they are." Marc Stein is the senior NBA writer for ESPN.com.
