Wizards drop fifth in a row

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

SAN ANTONIO – This was more like it for the San Antonio Spurs and, especially, David Robinson.

Michael Smith
Michael Smith and the Wizards never really get on track against the Spurs.

Two nights after being held scoreless for just the second time in his 12-year career, Robinson scored 16 points to back up Tim Duncan's 19 in a 107-78 rout of the Washington Wizards on Thursday night. Robinson needed to play just 19 minutes and Duncan sat out the final 14:21 as the Spurs tied Utah for the Midwest Division lead.

"We had some good concentration from the beginning," Robinson said. "We played how we are supposed to."

Robinson, 0-for-5 from the field in 21 minutes against Dallas on Tuesday, had eight points in the first 4:24 of the third quarter, helping the Spurs take a 67-47 lead.

Robinson also hit a 15-foot jumper at 3:47 of the second quarter to move past Isiah Thomas into 37th place on the NBA's career scoring list with 18,834 points.

Washington guard Mitch Richmond became the 26th player in NBA history to score 20,000 points when he hit a 16-foot jumper in the second quarter. Richmond led the Wizards, who have lost five in a row, with 18 points.

The Alamodome crowd gave Richmond a standing ovation.

"It's been a long 13 years and it feels great to be in the company of the 25 or 26 guys who are in that group," Richmond said. "I thought it would come a lot quicker. I've had a subpar three years in Washington. But that standing ovation was beautiful."

The rest of Washington's performance wasn't.

Juwan Howard, Washington's leading scorer at 17.9 points per game, managed just two points in the first half and was held without a basket until 4:04 remained in the second quarter. Howard finished with 11 points, while Tyrone Nesby scored 18 and Richard Hamilton 16.

"Every time we missed it seemed like they came back and scored," Howard said. "We were what, 5-for-19 shooting in the first quarter. Against a team like San Antonio, that's not going to do it."

The Wizards were held scoreless for 5:25 of the first quarter and hit just 26.3 percent of their shots from the field in the opening period. The Spurs held Washington without a field goal for 6:06 at the end of the first and the start of the second quarter, outscoring the Wizards 12-1 during that time.

Duncan led six San Antonio players in double figures and was 9-of-14 from the field. Duncan also added 12 rebounds for his NBA-leading 39th double-double of the season.

Reserve Jaren Jackson scored 14 points and Johnson added 10 in his second game back after missing 27 games with a hamstring injury.

"We knew we couldn't go in thinking this was an easy game for us," guard Derek Anderson said. "We showed an aggressive mindset from the start and that made the difference."
