MIAMI (AP) -- Anthony Mason did his talking on the court.
Mason scored 11 of his 24 points in the third quarter and led
the Miami Heat to an 88-78 victory over the Golden State Warriors
on Monday night.
Miami, behind the scoring of Mason, opened an 18-point lead in
the third period and cruised to its sixth consecutive home victory.
The Heat have won eight of their last nine.
Mason declined to talk to reporters after the game, but his play
spoke volumes.
"He has been playing well," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "When
the ball comes to him, he's been making good plays in the post.
"The thing that helps him is when he makes that medium-range
jump shot like he did tonight. That gives him the complete package
to his game."
Brian Grant scored 18 points and added 10 rebounds for Miami,
while Eddie Jones and A.C. Green each added 12 points.
Antawn Jamison scored 27 points for Golden State, which has lost
three of its last four games.
"We didn't execute our plays well enough," said Warriors guard
Mookie Blaylock, who added 17 points and eight assists. "We
couldn't get any good shots down the stretch, but that's also
because of Miami's defensive style of play."
The Warriors couldn't stop Mason, who tied a season-high for
points and led the Heat in scoring for the second time in the last
three games. He shot 7-for-12 from the field, but did most of his
damage from the foul line, shooting 10-for-12.
Mason hit a pair of free throws and a jumper on consecutive
possessions in the third period as Miami stretched its lead to
60-47 with 3:36 remaining. The Heat outscored the Warriors 29-16 in
the period.
Miami shot 26-for-29 from the line, while Golden State converted
eight of 10 free throws.
"The Heat are a very good defensive team," Golden State coach
Dave Cowens said. "There's a reason why they hold teams to around
86 points a game. They forced turnovers (18), and we normally don't
turn the ball over that much. The bottom line is that we played
their style of game and they're better at it than we are."
The Heat have won 15 of 20 after a 6-10 start and are making a
move in the Atlantic Division.
"After the start to the season we had, this is a complete
turnaround," Jones said. "That was something we'll never forget,
but that might be the reason why we're where we are. We were
underachieving, and we had to address that."
"We can't afford to get complacent," Miami's Bruce Bowen said.
"Sometimes winning brings complacency, and that's something we're
going to have to control."
Game notes
Jamison has led Golden State in scoring in seven of the
last nine games. ... The Warriors are 5-10 in their last 15 games.
... Of Golden State's 11 victories, seven are against teams that made the
playoffs last season. ... The Heat improved to 12-2 against teams
with losing records. ... Bowen was OK after taking an elbow to the
lip from teammate Todd Fuller during practice Sunday. Bowen, who
needed two stitches, started and scored four points in 25 minutes.
... Miami has won nine of its last 11 games against Golden State.
... Mason has scored in double-figures in 22 consecutive games, a
career-high.
