Spurs' Rose proves thorny to Warriors

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) -- Malik Rose might have surprised the Golden State Warriors with his performance on Saturday, but he didn't surprise his teammates.

Rose scored a career-high 26 points and had 11 rebounds as the San Antonio Spurs defeated the Warriors 117-105 for their third straight win.

"I was waiting for that performance from Malik because he played well in the preseason," said Spurs' center David Robinson, who had 12 points and nine rebounds. "He was in a zone tonight. His offense is a lot more advanced and he's not shy, he'll put that thing up."

Rose made all five of his shots in the third quarter and scored 11 points as the Spurs shot 82 percent in the period to help extend their lead to 20 points entering the fourth quarter.

"Malik had an All-Star game, I've never seen him shoot like that," said Golden State coach Dave Cowens. "It's just one of those things that catches you by surprise a little bit. He was making them in improbable places and really kept them alive."

Tim Duncan, who had 16 points and 13 rebounds, recorded his 156th career double-double in 208 games. He has reached double figures in scoring in 199 of them.

Sean Elliott added 18 points as the Spurs shot 50 percent from the floor.

Antawn Jamison scored 32 points to lead the Warriors, who have lost nine straight to San Antonio. The Warriors last beat the Spurs on March 4, 1998 in Oakland.

Jamison, who scored a combined 25 points in his first two games, had a lengthy discussion with Cowens on Friday to find ways to get him more involved with the offense.

"The first two games, I was worrying too much," said Jamison. "I just had to go out and have fun."

Thanks to their balanced scoring attack and superiority on the boards, the Spurs took a big lead into the final quarter. Duncan and Rose had a combined 33 points and 21 rebounds through three quarters.

"It's good to work on things over and over during the summer," said Rose, who was 10-of-12 from the floor. "At game time, it's time to show what you worked on offensively."

San Antonio never had less than an eight-point lead until late in the game, and led by as many as 22 points (99-77 with 9:41 remaining to play).

Golden State cut the lead to 108-101 after Dampier hit one of two free throws with 1:22 left to play, but could get no closer.

After spotting the Warriors a 15-7 lead midway through the first quarter, San Antonio went on a 15-2 run, led by six points from Rose, to take a 22-17 lead with 1:54 left in the quarter.

The Spurs never looked back, outscoring Golden State 9-1 in the last two minutes of the second quarter to take a 59-46 lead at halftime.

Danny Fortson had his third double-double in as many games for the Warriors with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
