SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Rick Adelman was more concerned with
Sacramento winning consecutive games for the first time in more
than a month than he was with his 400th career coaching victory.
Chris Webber had 23 points, 11 rebounds and six assists Tuesday night as the Kings downed the Boston Celtics 114-101.
Adelman joins a group of eight active coaches with 400 or more
wins. There are 28 coaches overall who have reached that mark.
"An amount like that means I've had some pretty good players,"
Adelman said. "I had some good players in Portland and I have some
here. It was nice to get that done at home."
It was also nice to record consecutive victories. That hadn't
been done since the Kings opened the season with a 9-1 record.
"You're kidding, that's a surprise, I didn't even know that,"
said Kings center Vlade Divac, who finished with 13 points, seven
rebounds and six assists. "Now we need to keep it going."
The Celtics need to find some answers on the road. It was the
11th straight road loss for Boston, which has dropped eight of nine
games overall. They are 1-11 on the road this season. The 1978-89
Celtics set a franchise record with 13 straight losses.
Boston rallied within 97-91 with 3:44 left, but the Kings made
six straight free throws and went on an 11-2 run to put the game
away. The Kings made 28-of-32 free throws.
"We really moved the ball well , probably the best we've done
all year," Adelman said. "We really had it hopping. We talked
about making that extra pass against this team. If you do that
you're going to get good shots."
Predrag Stojakovic scored 19 points for the Kings and Jason
Williams had 15 points and seven assists.
Antoine Walker led Boston with 23 points and eight rebounds.
Kenny Anderson added 17 points and nine assists.
"We finally found the time to wake up and play some defense,"
Walker said. "We forced turnovers and got back in the game in the
fourth quarter. Unfortunately moral victories are not what the team
is looking for."
Trailing by 16 points, Boston went on a 12-2 run, cutting
Sacramento's lead to 97-91. Webber made two free throws and
Williams added two more, putting the Kings ahead 101-91 with 2:54
left.
"All I care about is winning and we did," Williams said. "When you start worrying I think you play like a robot or scared and play too fast."
Ahead by 11 at halftime, the Kings used a 15-6 stretch in the
third quarter to take an 82-62 lead.
Webber had 10 points and five rebounds as Sacramento used its
up-tempo game to outscore Boston 28-19 in the third period, taking
an 88-68 lead into the fourth.
"We woke up and got a few stops (late), but with a team like
this you can't let them go out and shoot 50 or 60 percent," Paul
Pierce said.
Stojakovic made a pair of 3-pointers and scored 15 first-half
points as the Kings led 60-49. He scored 13 points in the second
period, helping the Kings stretch the lead into double figures.
Anderson had 11 points in the opening half for the Celtics and Adrian Griffin scored 10.
Game notes
In the first half the Kings' starters and reserves each
scored 30 points. ... Paul Pierce missed 7-of-9 shots in the
opening half, but made all four free throws. ... Out with a stress
fracture in his right foot the first 25 games, Danny Fortson played
in his second straight game, scoring nine points. ... The two teams
combined for only 10 first-half turnovers, four by the Kings.
