SEATTLE (AP) _ Gary Payton scored 26 points and Vin Baker added 25 points, as the Seattle SuperSonics beat the Miami Heat for the ninth straight time, 92-88 on Saturday night.

Payton's 3-point shot gave Seattle an 84-72 lead with 4:43 left. The Heat countered with a 10-2 run capped by Alonzo Mourning's jump hook to pull within two with 1:15 left.

The Sonics connected on eight of 10 free throws the rest of the way to hang on and beat the Heat for the 12th straight time in Seattle.

The Heat remain winless in Seattle. They also had their three-game road winning streak snapped.

Baker got off the Sonics off to a fast start, scoring Seattle's first 17 points of the game on seven baskets and three free throws.

Mourning led the Heat with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Jamal Mashburn had 21 points and Anthony Carter added 19 points.

Seattle led most of the way despite getting outrebounded 47-29. The Sonics forced the Heat into a season-high 25 turnovers and converted them into 20 points.

The Sonics got good production from their bench. Vernon Maxwell scored 16 points, eight in the final quarter. Ruben Patterson scored only seven points but made 4-for-4 from the free throw line the last 70 seconds and ignited the Sonics with his hustle in the third and fourth quarters.

The Sonics responded every time the Heat challenged. Dan Majerle's 3-pointer pulled the Heat within 71-67. Chuck Person answered with a 3-point shot for a 74-67 lead with 8:06 left.

The Sonics scored the final seven points of the third quarter on a basket by Payton, two free throws by Person a three-point play by Patterson for a 63-57 lead after three periods.

Jelani McCoy's dunk gave Seattle a 54-47 with 5:22 left in the third period. The Heat ran off eight straight points with Otis Thorpe's free throw giving Miami a short-lived 55-54 lead.

Notes: The Sonics activated Person for the game after missing five games with a sore right foot. He replaced Lazaro Borrell. ... Person played seven minutes in the first half and went 0-for-6 from the floor, all from 3-point range. He finished with eight points. ... Baker scored all Seattle's points until Payton made a free throw with 2:11 left in the first quarter. ... Miami's Rex Walters injured his right foot in the first half and did not play in the second half. ... The Heat have one game remaining on their six-game road trip, their longest of the season.
