Miami repays Vancouver for home loss

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) -- The Miami Heat weren't going to make the same mistake twice against the Vancouver Grizzlies.

Still smarting from Vancouver's 91-87 win in Miami earlier this month, the Heat -- led by Alonzo Mourning's 27 points -- bore down in the fourth quarter to pull out a 94-83 victory Sunday.

"Oh, it was in my mind, most definitely," said Mourning, referring to the earlier loss to Vancouver, the Heat's first at its new American Airlines Arena on Jan. 4. "I know with the way we played against that team that that wasn't Heat basketball. We didn't show it that day and they took advantage of it.

"Today we showed that we were on top of our game a little bit more. I don't know what the difference was, but it was in the past and we learn from our mistakes."

Outscoring the Grizzlies 29-18 in the fourth quarter, the Heat also dominated the boards, outrebounding Vancouver 48-32 over the entire game.

Mourning and P.J. Brown had 10 rebounds apiece, while Brown added 19 points. Mourning also had six blocked shots in helping the Heat -- coming off Friday's 92-87 win at Denver -- win back-to-back road games for the first time since Dec. 10, when they won three straight.

With the score tied at 74, Jamal Mashburn put Miami ahead for good, putting back a Mourning miss with 7:33 remaining.

That shot sparked a 9-1 run which ended with Voshon Lenard's 3-point basket putting the Heat ahead 83-75 with 5:41 left. Lenard, who finished with 14 points, sank the basket just as the 24-second shot clock buzzer sounded, and with Vancouver's Michael Dickerson getting a hand in his face.

With the win, the Heat improved to 24-12, inching within a game of the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Pacers.

Coach Pat Riley hoped going 3-1 on their four-game road trip is what the team needed, considering his Heat are 9-8 in their last 17 games. "You go out on the road sometimes and split and you feel good about it," Riley said. "It seems like we're getting back on the right track and playing our game a little bit better."

Dickerson scored 23 points, and Shareef Abdur-Rahim added 20 for the Grizzlies, who lost their third straight game, and fifth straight at home.

"I think every game is won and lost on the boards," said Vancouver coach Lionel Hollins. "When you get dominated on the boards like we got dominated, you're not going to win those kinds of games no matter how close they are."

The Heat were especially dominant in the second quarter, when they pulled down 18 rebounds, nine of them on the offensive boards. In comparison, the Grizzlies managed just nine rebounds got the period.

"We got beat by a better team," Hollins said.

Game notes
Despite Tim Hardaway's willingness to play, the Heat decided to rest their point guard for another few days to ensure that he's 100 percent. Hardaway, who has been practicing with the team, said Saturday that "I'm definitely playing Sunday." Instead, he missed his 25th game with a jammed right knee. ... The Grizzlies, 2-6 against Miami, are one of two NBA teams not to win a season-series against the Heat. The Toronto Raptors are the other. ... Dan Majerle hit one 3-point shot to extend his streak to 31 games, the longest of his career and two short of the Heat record, set twice by Hardaway.
