Sloan one of 11 coaches to get win 700

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME FLOW

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Jerry Sloan didn't have to do much coaching in his 700th career victory.

The Utah Jazz routed the Los Angeles Clippers 112-75 on Saturday night to usher Sloan into the elite company of just 11 other coaches. Sloan downplayed the milestone.

"I wish they didn't have numbers like that," said the 57-year-old coach, whose team has won eight of its last nine.

"The players are the ones who win the games, so it really doesn't make any difference to me one way or the other. I'm just lucky to have a job."

Karl Malone scored 24 points and Bryon Russell and Jeff Hornacek each added 17 as Sloan ran his record with Utah and Chicago to 700-403. His first victory as coach of the Jazz was against the Clippers in 1988.

Derek Anderson and Michael Olowokandi each scored 18 points for Los Angeles. The Clippers have lost seven straight on the road, and four in a row overall. They are 0-17 in the Delta Center.

The Jazz held the Clippers to 38.3 percent shooting (31-of-81) and outrebounded them 64-38. Lamar Odom was 3-of-14 and scored just 10 points, and Maurice Taylor was 3-of-14 and finished with eight points.

"Nobody likes to lose like this," said Odom, who had scored 26 points in each of his last two games. "I don't care if it's ping-pong. If you win 10 games of ping-pong and lose 25, you'll be bitter. You don't want losing to become you."

Utah, which trailed early in the second period, outscored the Clippers 18-3 to take a 12-point halftime lead. The Clippers would come no closer than 66-58 midway through the third period as Utah won for the 16th time in its last 19 games.

Utah pulled away in the third quarter, with Hornacek hitting three field goals and Russell making a a 3-pointer with 3:12 left to give the Jazz a 75-62 lead.

That started a 19-12 spurt that put Utah up 85-70 at the end of the quarter. The Jazz started the fourth quarter with a 13-1 run to put the game away.

Armon Gilliam, in his third game with the Jazz, had 13 points and 12 rebounds in 26 minutes.

"I'm feeling a lot more comfortable now," said Gilliam, a 12-year NBA veteran acquired Jan. 7. "I've been here a week now; I'm here to rebound and contribute where I can."

Game notes
The Jazz are 10-0 against the worst teams in the Western Conference (Dallas, Houston, Vancouver, Golden State, Denver and the Clippers). ... Utah has won 21 consecutive home games against the Clippers. ... Bryon Russell is averaging 16.2 points, and shooting 51.9 percent overall and 46.4 percent from 3-point range in his last nine games. ... An unusual occurrence: The Clippers play a doubleheader with the Lakers on Monday at the Staples Center.
