| AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- Young America took advantage of the
Swiss syndicate's mast problems while four other races were decided
by under a minute each in Saturday's third round-robin races in the
America's Cup challenger series.
Young America sailed the course on its own to win when the Fast
2000 syndicate did not start after snapping a mast during Friday's
race. The Americans picked up nine points for the win to move into
seventh place in the 11-team competition.
In other racing Saturday, Nippon beat Stars and Stripes by 45
seconds, Le Defi Francais did the same in 46 seconds over
Abracadabra, AmericaOne downed Young Australia by 56 seconds and
the Spanish Challenge defeated America True by 22 seconds.
Prada, which had a bye Saturday, leads the competition with 64
points, one better than AmericaOne, with Nippon at 56.5 and America
True on 47. Dennis Conner's Stars and Stripes is in fifth with 45.5
and the Spanish Challenge sixth 35, two better than Young America.
Young America crew member Jim Brady predicted the syndicate's fortunes will improve the rest of the series.
All eyes have been on the New York Yacht Club after its problems
in the second round, with one boat nearly sinking and the second
boat being damaged in the testing seas.
