Pick to Click: Paul Wilson vs. Brent Abernathy

ESPN.com

We asked you which Devil Rays player was most likely to have a breakout year in 2001. While many of you say Aubrey Huff will bust out this year, no one received more votes than pitcher Paul Wilson. We picked Brent Abernathy. Since we don't agree, we'll follow the progress of Wilson and Abernathy throughout the season and update you periodically to see who holds bragging rights.

Here are a few choice responses on your Pick to Click:

We hope Wilson stays healthy
Un-hitable the second half of 2000 and this spring. Appears healthy. May start season on pitch count, but if Grieve and others can give him decent run support, could win 12-15 games for a bottom of the league team. With a better team, would expect more wins. Should have a low WHIP and ERA.

Once Wilson was finally given a chance to perform in the big leagues by Tampa Bay last season, Wilson emerged as their best starter. This spring, Paul has nothing but continue the success he began last season. 15 wins and a sub 3.50 ERA are easily acheived goals this year.

Blake Fry
Oklahoma City, Okla.

If Wilson stays healthy, he has the pure stuff to become the staff ace. I think he'll put up excellent numbers across the board, and could win 15 games or more with decent run support. That might be more than can be expected for a Devil Rays pitcher, though.

ESPN.com's Pick to Click: Brent Abernathy
 Brent Abernathy
Abernathy is ready to cover second.
One of Baseball America's top 10 prospects Brent Abernathy has been in tight competition this spring with four-year second baseman Bobby Smith to win the starting role. Abernathy's baseball instincts and his ability to hustle develop him into the true second baseman. With his display of hitting talent this spring, Abernathy looks to be Devil Rays selection at second base. Abernathy has been one of best hitters this spring. The 23-year-old hitter is not only a contributor at the plate but is an above-average basestealer as well. Abernathy's appearance at the 2000 Olympics, he batted .385 and led all players with 15 hits and six doubles in nine games.
