Dodgers fans give midseason report
We told you what we thought of the Dodgers' first-half performance, now you've told us. Here is what you had to say about our reports and what the Dodgers have to do in the second half:

I don't see the Dodgers getting any better in the second half. Shawn Green seemed to be getting tired due to the lack of rest, and it showed at the plate. I don't think Carlos Perez, and most imporant, Eric Gagne can put it together for the Dodgers to make a second half run. Go on the trading block and see what you can get for Dreifort (possibly a center fielder/lead-off hitter), and wait till next year to make the push for Alex Rodriguez.

Bottom line, the pitching for L.A. is horrendous and awful. Other than Kevin Brown, no one in that rotation gives the Dodgers a chance to win. Chan Ho Park has been decent, but inconsistent, and Dreifort and Gagne are just not getting it done. If L.A. does not acquire another arm before the trading deadline is up, Kevin Malone and Davey Johnson better start searching the classified for another job.

As a lifelong Dodger fan, I continue to grow frustrated each year. I'm finally getting over the shock of seeing those ridiculous batting practice jerseys during some games. That's just one sign that the new regime doesn't give a hoot about history and tradition. Spare me the pictures on the outfield wall. Just play hard like those that are immortalized in the Dodger record books. But I see no heart. That's where they'll fail. Sheffield is putting up the numbers, the defense is coming around but I just don't see them getting over the hump. I certainly can't see the Dodgers taking a series from the Braves or Mets. But I'll keep my Dodger hat on and try to remember guys like Orel Hershiser in their prime.

I don't understand the Dodgers any more than anybody else. They need to get there act together and play like the Dodgers that I have been a fan of for 25 years. I think that they need to start playing like a team, and the pitching needs to start, especially Dreifert -- what is up with him?

How much more money are they going to keep spending to lose? Can you say, "The National League West Balitmore Orioles."

For me, the biggest surprise for the Dodgers so far has been a good one, and it's Eric Karros. I think his overachievement in the first half of the season (remember that he usually gets off slowly) surpasses the underachievement of Green, who has been a steady player but not the superstar we Dodgers fans want him to be.

The Dodger's pitching is very poor. I went to the Mariners/Dodgers game and saw the rookie Gagne get pounded. I keep up with the team pretty well and it seems to me he isn't ready. I understand the need is there, but is sending this kid out to get "blasted" every outing the best way to turn him into a star? We have a need in the bullpen as well. Let him get some work in down there for a while. We know he will get his oppotunities.

I do understand you evaluating Dodgers as one of the underachievers in the league but as we all know that the win/loss records aren't the only measures we've got. You forgot to mention how Eric Karros is having a blast this year along with how Chan Ho Park's having a breakthrough year of his career. The slumps they had at the end of the first half (inconsistent as might be said) is surely something that a good team won't allow but as I see it, Giants and Rockies don't have THE element for that wildcard spot (like quality pitchers, i.e. Kevin Brown, Chan Ho Park).

I think the Dodgers are still a solid team. If they can pick up a solid closer (maybe John Wetteland) and another solid starter they can contend with the rest of the NL West. If you think about it they are in pretty good shape. For being as inconsistent as they have been, they're only six games back. If they can make the moves they need they'll be right back in the race.

The Dodgers are like any other team in baseball. The pitching will determine their success. In the past it was a matter of going to the farm club and introducing a new upcoming prospect. Baseball has changed, and today the answer becomes ... "who can we acquire in trades or free agency?" It has reached the point in the season that a trade is needed to acquire pitching help. Otherwise you're looking at another sub-par finish.

While Kevin Brown is at his prime, the Dodgers should go for the playoff berth. Before July 31st, they should get a decent lead-off hitter and No. 2 starter by making some trades. Chan Ho Park doesn't seem to fill that spot. He is a natural No. 3 starter. Then, the Dodgers will be able to contend for World Series. Go Dodgers!
