Twins fans give midseason report
We told you what we thought of the Twins' first-half performance, now you've told us. Here is what you had to say about our reports and what the Twins have to do in the second half:

This season has really been a disappointment. The Butch Huskey and Sean Bergman signings were the worst in the offseason. This team is going nowhere until Carl Pohlad is gone, Tom Kelly is released or moves on, and of course when we get some talent that knows how to pitch and hit. This is pathetic and as a long time Twins fan, I'm quite frankly sick and tired of losing. Time for Paul Molitor and Kirby Puckett to run the show and motivate these guys!

Surprisingly, Minnesota also has some pretty solid position players. Corey Koskie, Matt Lawton, Jacque Jones and Christian Guzman would be considered stars if they played in bigger markets like New York.

Lost in the Twins dismal first half was the late emergence of Cory Koskie as a solid fielder and steadily improving hitter. While the Twins at this point have Brad Radke and four to five No. 4 (at best) starters, Redman and Milton seem to be proving they are well on their way to becoming strong pitchers in the big leagues.

Matt Lawton could be the next Kirby Puckett and take the Twins to the next level with a little help. Don't forget about Jacque Jones. He's starting to put out some big numbers for a little guy. Give him until next year or the year after. Jones and Lawton could be the power the Twins are looking for.

The Twins have taken the all important first step in signing Radke. They need to lock up Matt Lawton to a multi-year deal next.

What the Twins have accomplished thus far is really a credit to Tom Kelly's abilities as a manager to handle young players effectively. The Twins obviously have no chance, but it is nice to see that Radke has re-signed with the team. It would be nice to see Carl Pohlad try to build a team around him and show Radke that the Twins want to be competitive.

The Twins have done an admirable job based on their talent level. They are like a Triple-A team playing in the majors, but they can look to Montreal and Kansas City as hope that they can compete in a small market. Still, MLB needs to get a decent revenue sharing plan so that these markets can compete, unless all we want are the New York, LA, and Chicago teams.

In a world of Yankees it is difficult to cope with being a fan of, as New Yorker's call them, 'the Twinkies.' All I have to say is that the Radke contract is just another horrible move by the Minnesota head office. Why would you spend that kind of money on a very, and I stress very, mediocre player.

Nils Widboom
New York, N.Y.

The Twins need to get a few positions straightened out; catcher, first base in particular. These positions are not providing the power that we need to move up. Matt LeCroy may need another half season down, before he can make a bigger contribution. Also, Javier Valentin may be up shortly and hopefully he can help, but I don't think he's a power hitter. Ron Coomer is a nice guy, but he's not the answer at first.

The Twins should have traded Radke. Milton is the No. 1 starter and to pay that price for a No. 2 or No. 3 starter on a losing team is not the way to rebuild. One of the NY teams might have traded us some good prospects as they did for Viola and Knoblauch.

Surprisingly, Minnesota also has some pretty solid position players. Corey Koskie, Matt Lawton, Jacque Jones and Christian Guzman would be considered stars if they played in bigger markets like New York. The most promising sign for the Twins isn't on the field. The fact that Pohlad was willing to shell out money for Radke gives Twins fans hope for the future.
