Cubs fans give midseason report
We told you what we thought of the Cubs' first-half performance, now you've told us. Here is what you had to say about our reports and what the Cubs have to do in the second half:

If the Cubs want to contend they need to go out and sign a top notch free agent, like A-Rod. The problem is the management has the money but are unwilling to part with a $15 million or so contract per year. As long as Wrigley stays full, the Cubs will go nowhere. Unless Ed Lynch and Andy Macphail have a change of heart. In regards to Sosa, either he must go or Baylor must go. No exceptions!

That was a little rough on Kerry Wood. He has made some great starts this year...and some not so great. But it's been over a year since he has thrown. Give him a chance and maybe 10 more starts then see where he is.

Jojo Martinez
New Haven, Conn.

This is the worst organization in baseball. They should dump Rodriguez, Tapani, Grace, and Aguilera for prospects or usable young players. Really, this team should just start over. Lynch has shown no ability to differentiate between talent and garbage, regardless of Tribune budgets.

You know very little about the Cubs. Kerry Wood completed only one game in 98' so why is it a surprise to you he hasn't completed a game this year. Sosa and Don Baylor's relationship is said to be good by everyone (including Sosa) except for you. The biggest disappointment is not Kerry. He is doing fine. He did not do a full spring training and missed a year. I am happy because he doing well as of late. You say only 63 stirkeouts in 65 2/3 innings. That is a very good total. Do the world a favor and stop writing about the Cubs, because you obviously don't have a clue about what you are talking about.

I think that the Cubs really need to try and pursue a contract extension with Sammy Sosa. He is a great asset to the club, and they will need him in their line-up if they hope to make a serious run at any title.

The Cubbies blew it on Sammy. Let him go try to get his $17 million and when he comes begging back give him a 13-14 bid and watch him grab it.

Your analysis of the Cubs is correct in some aspects and completely wrong and somewhat run-of-the-millish in other aspects. Young has been a nice surprise and off-the- field turmoil has affected their season. I wouldn't have been opposed to trading Sammy when it began, but the Cubs flat out blew it. Keep Sammy!Keep Sammy! Keep Sammy!

I believe the Cubs should trade the veterans that they cling to each and every year. The production of Mark Grace is not improving and the Cubs could better themselves in the long run by dealing Tapani and Valdes. With Lieber, Wood, Downs, and some prospects, the Cubs could definitley build for the future. Henry Rodriguez is expendable because G. Hill can hold down the fort until Cory Patterson arrives.

Kerry Wood hasn't pitched in over a year, yet we should expect him to pick up right where he left off before major arm surgery? Kerry has had his ups and downs in his return, but has looked alot better his last two starts. Wood hasn't thrown a complete game? Thank God he hasn't! The last thing the Cubs need is Wood throwing 130 pitches a game. He isn't striking out everybody in sight? If it means he throws fewer and better pitches, getting people to pop up and ground out, I'll take that over 20 strikeouts any day. The Cubs stink, agreed. It's not Kerry Wood's fault. Biggest disappointment: the bullpen hands down.

Following this season from Jerusalem, I have to say that this team of many miracles has been saving them for the second half of the season. Sure it's taken Don Baylor, Kerry Wood, etc... time to get settled in. But the second half will be a different story. This is a team that is solid in every position and will turn some heads in the second half. Sosa, Grace, Wood, Tapani, etc... will get hot, while in the American League, teams will start to remember how easy is is to stop the White Sox - or at least that's what I'm praying for.

Look at what Kerry Wood has done in coming back months before he was expected to? You desk jockeys get a little case of carpal tunnel syndrome and it's done typing for a week. Ask Steve Karsay and Cal Eldred, 18 saves and 10 wins respectively, how long it has taken them to regain their form? The answer is pretty universal, 18-24 months. Should we throw Billy Koch into the mix, or would that be too much research? Wood is now 15 months removed from the surgery and he only has three wins to show for it. Boo-hoo. Any baseball fan should be amazed to see him pitching at this level so soon after Tommy John surgery.

If your superstar and manager are not getting along, there is an easy solution...fire the manager. I'm pretty sure Don Baylor isn't going to hit 50-60 home runs this year.
