Padres fans give midseason report
We told you what we thought of the Padres' first-half performance, now you've told us. Here is what you had to say about our reports and what the Padres have to do in the second half:

I think your analysis of the Padres is short-sighted. Granted, they never were in any realistic position to contend this year, but they are not half as bad as you make them sound. One cannot ignore the impact injuries has had on this team. They have had over 40 different players on their 25-man roster due to injuries. Their top three starters have been injured, as have their top two relievers not named Hoffman. And just about every other pitcher they've called up to fill holes, and a good many of their bats, including their best hitter. Had this team remained healthy, it would be no stretch to say that they are easily a slightlly-above-.500 team. As it is, they have managed to play .500 ball the past month despite the injuries and, in an acknowledged tough division, are only 12.5 games back.

I think your assessment is fair. However, I think it should be tempered with the fact that the pitching staff has had so many injuries. Over half of the starting pitchers have been on the DL for two to three months; Hitchcock for the year. Middle relief has also suffered from injuries. The bright spots have been Adam Eaton and Brian Tollberg. Finally, the Padres have lost a lot of one run games. I would suggest that with Gwynn in the lineup, half of those would have been victories.

The biggest disappointment for the Padres has been Damian Jackson, the man they traded Greg Vaughn to get. He has shown flashes of excellence, but has not yet played up to ability or expectation.

The Padres have had numerous players on the DL this year. The oldest member of their staff right now is Brian Tollberg, a rookie. It is true the Padres have struggled, but not mentioning their injuries is a "one baseball" move.

Agreed that the Padres don't have the talent to contend in the division, but at one point this season, the Padres had almost 10 players on the DL - at the same time! They were paying their injured roster more than their active roster. They still have six pitchers on the DL. Bad defense and injuries have really made this a depressing season in SD. The pitching is bad too, but considering most of these guys should still be in Double-A, it's actually somewhat impressive. Hopefully this experience will make these younger players mature faster and they can actually contend by the time the new ballpark opens.

The padres need some offensive threats, or at least someone that will come through in the clutch. They have lost 17 one-run games in the first half. A hit here and a steal there and they could be above .500. They have to focus on getting ahead before the 7th or 8th so Hoffman can do his thing. The other problem they face is the depleted pitching staff. There are some big surprises in the young talent they have, but I don't believe they can hold out for the second half. I will always hope for a strong second half, maybe 45-30 can give them a wild-card, but I know skipper Bruce will have them back up there soon.

The biggest disappointment for the Padres is Randy Myers. At least Hitchcock tried to play. Myers is sucking over $6 million out of the Padres payroll and doesn't even play or practice with the team. He is a waste of money and a horrible investment for the Padres. Without a doubt Randy Myers is the biggest disppointment for the San Diego Padres.

Boring baseball in San Diego. Hardly! I love watching this extremely talented and young team. The Padres have been decimated by injuries this year which has forced Bochy to use players that are completely inexperienced. Yet, the Padres have exceeded the expectations of most by playing opponents very competively. Unfortunately, a major trend among a young team is a horrible won-loss record in one-run games, which has killed the Padres. However, the future looks bright in San Diego with unhearlded talents like Owens, Eaton, Tollberg, Clement, Klesko, and Nevin.

Congratulations on seeing the glass half empty. What you fail to mention is that injuries have ravaged four out of the five opening day pitchers and three in the bullpen. Their ERA still ranks better than half of the National League clubs - and they are doing that with 4 Triple-A pitchers (meanwhile Eaton and Tolberg are gaining experience).

While no team wants to be 12 games under 500, the season could certainly a lot worse considering the injuries.

As a native San Diegan, I can't help but be disappointed in the Padres. Yes they are in the tightest division in baseball, and yes they have a few bright spots in Trevor Hoffman, Eric Owens, Ryan Klesko, Bret Boone, and Phil Nevin. But 37-49? I feel terrible for manager Bruce Bochy -- the only French-born coach in the majors. But someday the owners will have to wake up and get this team some serious talent. Won't they?

Overall a solid breakdown of highs and lows for the Padres. However, "talent-deprived" is a poor choice of words. A team that is rebuilding through its farm system isn't expected to be a division leader its first two years.

Come on! You have to agree that Ryan Klesko is having a great year and should be an All-Star. He's batting .320 with 19 HR, which by the way is already past his season totals over the past several years. With 56 RBI he is on his way to his career high also with 11 steals. which is also already a career high for him...dont forget his on base percentage is up to .405(career high) and SLG .625 (career high)and Let's not mention he is on his way to career highs in doubles, runs and hits.
