Expos fans give midseason report

We told you what we thought of the Expos' first-half performance, now you've told us. Here is what you had to say about what the Expos have to do in the second half:

The Expos are a two-man team? They have four players with over 50 RBI and Pavano, Vazquez, and Armas have all pitched well. Their downfall will be the health of the pitching staff, not the offense.

The 2000 Expos are once again testament to the fact that Felipe Alou is the best manager of pitchers in baseball. The return of Pavano, Thurman and or Irabu will take pressure off the bullpen, and the wins will come. The Expos are a second-half team, and they will get better performances in the second half from Widger, third base (Mordecai or Barrett) and center field (Bergeron, Wilton Guerrero or possibly Milton Bradley). Don't count this team out just yet.

Malcolm Stewart

I don't think there is any coincidence about the Expos' fall from the definite Wild Card spot and the surge of rumors about moving the team. If we all knew they were in Montreal to stay, I think they'd show us their true skills.

Jeremy Toeman
San Francisco

If Rondell White and Lee Sevens can continue to concentrate and can come back from injury and contribute some wins, I think the Expos can stay in the hunt. It would be nice if they could stay away from that "win six, lose six" pattern they've been following this year.

Dal Hines
Ottawa

I disagree that Vladimir Guerrero is the MVP of the first half for the Expos. The main reason is everyone expects it from him. Jose Vidro has been the main reason he's having a better season. He gets on base to give Guerrero a chance to drive in so many runs. Also, he gets on base, making it more difficult to pitch around Guerrero. Vladimir Guerrero is the best all-around right fielder in the National League (no disrespect meant to Shawn Green), but Guerrero would not put up close to the same numbers if he did not hit behind Vidro.

Kabir Gandhi
Pittsburgh, Pa.

I think you're right on the money with the pitching situation. It hurts to think what we could be doing if Lloyd and Urbina were ready every night. It would take a lot of pressure off our youngsters who are starting. Don't sleep on Lee or either, these guys are contributing, but the V's get all the props on SportsCenter. There must be at least a half dozen cities south of the border salivating, just waiting for the end of the season so they can open up the vault and bring in a team on the rise. It's a shame. Que sera, sera.

Marcus Hendricks
Montreal

You have forgotten to mention one very important name: Felipe Alou. Felipe's name should be associated with the Expos success every time. I'm really glad to see Felipe's boys (and I'm not talking about Moises and his pitiful three-time NL Central Division Champion Astros!) finally get some recognition.

Steve Hirsh
Houston

I think the Expos are a year away. The hitters need to learn to take walks and the pitchers need to stay healthy. A rotation of Pavano, Vazquez, Hermanson, Armas, and can play with anyone, and a healthy Ugueth Urbina next year will allow Steve Kline to return to the role of "Best Setup Man in the NL." I wonder how you could call Guerrero's season a career year. He's only 24, and he's just continuing the ascent from 1998 and 1999.

Ithaca, N.Y.

All the Expos need is a healthy team and a trade -- Widger for a third pitcher -- and were all set for the World Series!

Mario Ducharme
Temiscaming, Quebec

Vladimir Guerrero as MVP? Agreed. But to say "Like there's anyone else" is ridiculous. Ever heard of Jose Vidro? Vidro is as big a part of this team as Guerrero. He's got a higher batting average, more hits, more doubles, more runs scored and has been Roberto Alomar-like at second.

Sebastien Robert
Montreal

I think the Expos are a lot more than Vidro and Guerrero. While the team could do better on the mound, the emergence of Pavano and Vasquez are certainly impressive. The loss of Urbina and Lloyd was a big blow to the team hopes of making the playoffs for the first time since 1994.
