Marlins fans give midseason report

We told you what we thought of the Marlins' first-half performance, now you've told us. Here is what you had to say about what the Marlins have to do in the second half:

With the young talent of this club, you might see another championship run in the not-so-distant future. Unless the ghost of Wayne Huzienga creeps up to sell them off.

Charlie Graul
Coconut Creek, Fla.

It is time for Dave Dombrowski to trade for Charles Johnson, and give the team a better shot at the wild card. Say Charles adds 10 more homers for the season, that would be 10 more then Bako and Redman have in the first half. Plus you get a catcher that knows how to handle a pitching staff and one that throws runners out. Let's also add the fact that the last time Charles played for the Marlins, at the end of the season, they won the wild-card berth and went on to win the World Series!

Jesse Perez
Miami

Third Place? We could easily be in second! All we need is a healthy Alex Fernandez and the other Alex has to go back to '99 form. If the Marlins could trade for a starting pitcher such as Shane Reynolds they might have a shot at a wild-card spot!

Albert Alfonso
West Palm Beach, Fla.

As good as the Marlins have been, they have gotten absolutely no production from the catching position. Although they do have Ramon Castro waiting in the wings, I think it would be wise to get some help. Getting Charles Johnson, for example, would add some pop to the lineup and stabilize the catching position at least for this year. Also, if the starting pitching holds up, you never know what can happen.

Alex Naar
Miami

I've only watched two games on television since Wayne dismantled the world champs. I am now finding myself on-line, sneaking a peek at the Marlins' scores nightly. I think I'll be tuning in for the second half of the season.

Lew Dunham
Melbourne, Fla.

Jason Kendall, that's all we need! Any other suitable catcher facsimile will do also. Preston Wilson's strikeouts notwithstanding, the biggest difference from last year is the fact that the Marlins are not the worst two-strike hitters on the planet anymore. When they come to the plate now, they not only have an idea of the strike zone, but they understand that making the pitcher work can pay off in the late innings and even give them a free pass or two. Learning to be happy and content with a base on balls, has made them better hitters and the team a better ballclub.

Mike Gutierrez
Miami

I'm not joking, but I think the Marlins have a shot at the playoffs this year. Look at the Red Sox. Are they doing well? But everyone still believes something will happen.

The Florida Marlins are a young and exciting ballclub with a future as bright as a Miami day in July. It's just too bad that because of the lack of fan support, this gritty team might be playing elsewhere in the coming years.

Arlington, Va.

Although I am delighted by their performance, I am not necessarily surprised. Dave Dombrowski is one of the best, if not the best, general manager out there, even though he has had to follow unusual demands over the years. Anyway, this gutty team is what he's been building towards, and it's eerily similar to the third-year Marlins' performance after their first two losing years. The Marlins have already proven, you only have to be the wild card to win it all.

Robert Sandbach
Gainesville, Fla.

Where did Luis Castillo come from? He's fourth in the NL in batting average -- when was the last time a Marlin was that high? If his RBI were higher, he'd easily be the team MVP, but that's been hurting him. What else can you say about Alfonseca? Like he said in a recent Miami Herald interview, when he comes in, "It's over." Gonzalez is one of the very few Marlins that you can criticize. Everyone works hard night in and night out. Like their new campaign slogan says, "Everyday day. Every game. All heart."

Jordan Sangerman
Miami
